Embassy Review : |
My Fiance interviewed in Jo'burg for his K-1 Visa. Here is what was relayed to me:
Arrived at embassy and asked to leave his phone with security (he already knew that, but he didn't have anywhere to put it so he took it with him). He arrive at 12:45pm. There was so much traffic he was almost late, so leave early. He was coming from Pretoria. He went inside and was instructed to take a seat and they would call his name. His name was called and he went to the first window with a South African woman. She asked for his packet 3 and according to my fiance, she didn't even ask him any questions about our relationship. He was instructed to go pay the fee but when he got to the window with the 3 $100 bills, they would not accept one of them because it had writing on it. Apparently they have to be spanking new bills or bills that have not been altered? I thought it was weird that they wouldn't take it. He had to go outside and find an ATM to get rand. They only take either all dollars or all rand, not a combo of both.
He found an ATM, came back to pay and then was instructed to wait again to be called. He was call up by an American woman who swore him in and asked him some basic questions:
-How did we meet?
-How long have we know each other?
-What I do for work in the US?
-She looked at the pictures and asked who the white woman was in the pictures when I went to visit him, he told her that the woman was a friend of a friend.
-She asked how my friend felt about our relationship
-I think that was about it, very simple questions.
She then gave him a green slip and told him to come back a week later (4/2) to pick it up, but he told her that he lives in Cape Town, so she gave him the info for DHL. He asked if he was approved and she said yes.
DHL- I was confused because I thought if he wanted to get his passport delivered to a DHL office in Cape Town he wouldn't have to pay a fee, but he still has to pay R90 for DHL. You have to go to Standard bank to pay it, they emailed him the information. He paid, scanned and email back the proof of payment with his address for delivery. He did this today (4/3) and it's overnight so he should get it 4/4.
Everyone at the consulate was nice and a lot easier than he thought. We were both very stressed out because he has fine on his record for marijuana possession, but they didn't even ask about that.

Timeline Comments: None yet, be the first!
*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
