Hi all,
My wife just completed her interview at the Mumbai consulate yesterday. The good news is that we got approved. First of all, we would like to thank everybody here at VJ who answered our queries and sent their support and wishes. Your input certainly made this process a lot more bearable and easy. Therefore, I would like to share her experience for all those who have their interviews lined up at the Mumbai consulate. Before talking about the interview, I would like to share a few things about the fingerprinting procedure. The most important thing needed for this day is your DS-260 confirmation page. Please make sure to carry it with you or else they will ask you to get it from a cyber cafe, but won't tell you where the cyber cafe is. In case you need it, the cyber cafe is in the building right next door. They have the locker facilities there too. Don't expect to get any guidance regarding these things from the people at the VAC. They are not allowed to do so. Also keep two of your 2 x 2" photos, fingerprinting confirmation letter, call letter and passport handy. About the interview, my wife's interview was scheduled at 7.30 am. She was there by 7 am. Just make sure you have no CDs, coins, keys, wallets, electronics with you. My wife was given two envelopes from the place she got her medical done. These envelopes were sealed with a tape that said "to be opened by the US Consulate only". One of them had a medical exam CD in it. She was asked to get rid of the CD before entering the Consulate. However, they did not tell how. In case any of you also have two envelopes with the CD sealed inside one of them, make sure to carry only the envelope that has no CD in it. DO NOT carry the one which has a CD in it. They won't let you enter the facility. Once in, a sticker with a token no. was pasted on her call letter. Then she was asked to put her documents (DS-260 confirmation with the stamp of VAC and two photos stapled to it, birth certificate, marriage certificate, police clearance, and medical) in order. But, if you have been divorced or have lived in any other country, make sure to keep your divorce certificate and the foreign police clearance with it, even if not told so, as the officer will ask for it later. Once her no. appeared on the screen, she went to the respective window, where an Indian lady collected her documents. Surprisingly, she was not asked for the tax documents. The one problem she faced was that her birth certificate was a translated version of the original, which she did not carry with her. Fortunately, she was told that her interview and all her other procedures will be carried out but she will only receive her visa once she submits her birth certificate in the local language at the pick-up location. Then after a little wait, she was called to another window for her interview. To our great surprise, unlike what we had read everywhere, the interview was very casual and light. The guy who interviewed her was not stern-faced and was was very friendly. He confirmed whether the person calling her to the US was her husband or not. Then he asked her how we met; why my divorce date and our wedding date was so close (because there was only a month's gap in between); Had she been to the US before and whether she knew where Shrewsbury in MA was (to which she very frankly said that she had no clue and he laughed at it); He then asked what she had been doing for work. After listening to her answer, he commented that "you will have no issues in the US". Finally he said, "Do one thing, call your husband and tell him that your visa is approved!!!"..... Yeahhhhh. The interviewer did not see of our photos or documents. So this was how our 18 month old ordeal ended in just one hour. Just make sure to be relaxed, confident about what you are saying, and be pleasant. They are just making sure you are telling the truth. They are not there to reject your application. We know how difficult this can be, so all the best to the rest of you.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
