Local US CIS Office Review: Houston TX

Event Description
Review Date : May 24, 2013
Embassy Review : Had my interview on May 23, 2013 at the Houston office and wanted to share my experience since this site helped me out by reading others' experiences. I need to state that I entered the US under the Visa Waiver Program as a minor over 15 years ago. I'm a British citizen and recently married my US citizen husband.

Our appt was at 9:30am and we arrived at about 9am. There were quite a number of people waiting but there seemed to be a lot of Immigration officers at work. We were called in at about 9:30am and were interviewed by a lady. Once we got to her office, she swore us in before we took our seats. Then she asked us for our driver's licenses and asked me for my passport.

She started off with the I-130 and directed most of the questions to my husband. She asked him to state his name, date of birth and address. Then she asked him to state my full name and date of birth. She then proceeded to ask him how we met and if I've ever been married. And when we first met in person (since my husband lived in Arizona at the time while I lived in Houston). She then turned to me and asked me if my husband has ever been married previously (yes) and what his ex-wife's name is; I answered her questions. She asked me if he had any children (yes) and then asked for the children's names and ages. She wrote down this information in her notes. Then she asked me where he worked and asked him where I worked.
Then she moved onto the I-485 form. She verified all the details with me and asked me the yes/no questions on the form which I responded in all nos. She then asked if I had additional documentation to proof my marriage. I provided her with our car insurance, Bank Statements, utility bills as well as our wedding album and additional photos. She looked through the wedding album and asked my husband who our witnesses were and he answered and she made a few comments here and there while looking through the album.
Then she went back to his previous marriage divorce document and stated that she didn't know that the state of Tennessee issued divorce certificates and she was expecting to see the multiple page divorce decree. She asked if I had the decree but we didn't have that since what we brought with us was the original certified Divorce Certificate. Then she stated that she'd have to check to make sure the certificate was enough as proof of his divorce from his ex-wife. And that we would receive a RFE if we need to send in the divorce decree. She made copies of both of our driver's license and my passport.

All in all, the interview went well but I was hoping we would be approved on the spot since I was very thorough in the documentation we sent it. We were in and out in less than 30 minutes.
Harassment Level : Moderate

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
