I traveled to Johannesburg from Cape Town and landed the day before the interview.
I arrived at the consulate at 12:45 and waited in line, there were not many people ahead of me. I had parked my car at the mall across the street and left my cellphone in the car (they make you turn off your electronic devices and leave them at with the security guards). At 1pm we were told to take out our appointment letters and passports, then we were allowed in one at a time.
After going through a very simple security check, I was told to go through a to the next building.I was asked for my medical records, but mine was couriered to the embassy by the doctor himself. I went through the doors and was told by a second security guard to get a number, and then to sit infront of window 3. After about 20 minutes I was called and I was asked to hand over my unabridged birth certificate, my police certificate and my fiance's financial information. also I had to hand over evidence of the relationship (which happened to be a huge file). I was asked to sign the DS 230 infront of the woman interviewer (do not sign the DS documents beforehand). I was asked: Where did we meet, when did we meet, What work i did in the US, does my fiance have sisters and brothers? What work my fiance does. How I relationship progressed. When do we plan on getting married.
After that, I was told to take a seat and I had to wait for approximately 20 minutes then the officer called me. I was then sworn in, and he asked me some of the same questions, and also what my fiance's education history, as well as mine, where my fiance stays, how often he came to South Africa and when. How long we have known each other. Do his parents know me, do my parents know him. And they also asked me if my fiance tried to get me to overstay my previous visa.
After that I was given a green slip and I was asked if I wanted it couriered or if I wanted to pick it up. I opted to pick it up because my stay in Johannesburg was until the weekend. I then asked "Am I approved?" and the officer smiled and said yes.
The next day I waited in line and showed the security guard my green slip, security checks were the same, and this time I was directed to window 11. I waited approximately 20 minutes and was called to sign the rest of my DS forms and then I had to wait again. Finally I was called up and handed a big envelope, an orange information sheet and my passport. I was told the envelope should remain closed and should be handed to the officers at the POE, I also had to sign showing I was approved and I was told that I had 6 months to go to the usa, and that upon entry I had 3 months to get married.
Overall the service was friendly, and I experiences no hassles at all.
I had all my documents and answered honestly and sincerely.
