My fiancé and I both arrived in Vancouver on a Saturday. He flew in from Houston, TX and I flew in from North West British Columbia. We stayed in a lovely basement suite that was easily accessible from the airport and to downtown by skytrain. And MUCH cheaper than getting a hotel room especially if you are staying for a week like we did.
On Monday morning I had my medical exam with Dr. Cheema in Surrey. We woke up extra early and gave ourselves plenty of time to get there since we were taking public transit. Public transit in Vancouver is a blessing! Having lived in Vancouver before I knew how to use the transit quite well but even if you have never been to Vancouver it's easy to use and there are always people to ask.
We arrived in Surrey about an hour early so we went to the Starbucks across the street to kill time. When it was time to go in there was a gentleman ahead of me who was also applying for a visa it looked like. After waiting a couple of minutes a very nice lady called me up to the counter (the other ladies behind the desk were calling her Mrs. Cheema, so I assume she was Dr. Cheema's wife) She asked for my documents - VACCINATION RECORDS, PASSPORT, & LETTER FROM US CONSULATE WITH CASE #. Going into the medical exam I wasn't quite sure what the letter was but it happens to be the very first letter the consulate sends you after the have received your packet from the NVC. For some reason I was missing a booster shot for my measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine which should have been done when I was one so I was told I would have to get that. She photocopied my papers and told me to sit and wait. After about 15 minutes they called me into a room and my fiancé came inside with me. The assistant took my weight and height she was very friendly and made small talk with me. After that Dr. Cheema came in. He is a super nice guy and makes you feel incredibly comfortable. He asked me if it was ok that my fiancé was in the room as well since that is part of the protocol if someone else is present in the room. He asked me a bunch of questions like if I smoke, if I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol etc. All yes or no questions. Then he asked my fiancé to step out of the room so he could examine my lower region and give me my vaccine. After that he invited my fiancé back in told me there should be no problem and that my fiancé is stealing a healthy Canadian.
Upon leaving the clinic one of the ladies behind the front desk told us we could pick up the results the following day and that now we had to go to a lab to get my blood work done and an x-ray. We took a bus since it was quite a few blocks away. The 319 bus takes you right to where you need to go. I believe it was 84th Ave. Blood work and X-ray were quite self explanatory.
On Tuesday we traveled back to Surrey and picked up the results from the clinic. You get one sealed envelope which you DO NOT OPEN (The US Consulate will open it when you get there for your interview) and you get an open envelope which you bring to the border when you first enter the USA.
Thursday was the day of my interview. I surprisingly was more excited and anxious than I was nervous. It really helped to have my fiancé there with me. We hopped on the skytrain around 8:30 and ended up with plenty of time to kill since the interview was at 10. Hit up Starbucks again since its right beside the Consulate.
At around 9:45 we approached the greeter (there was no line surprisingly!) and told him we were there for my K1 visa interview. He then told me that my fiancé wasn't allowed inside and that they were only letting translators in. I told my fiancé I would be fine and I could go in by myself. That part was a little disappointing because we were both looking forward to being in there together. After dealing with the greeter outside he directed me to another man outside who was a security guard. He asked to see my passport and looked through my file folder of documents and asked if I had any electronics or keys on me. If you can help it bring as little as possible. I literally went with nothing except my documents needed. They then give you a card that says "20th floor wicket B" and direct you inside up the stairs to where security is. After you go through security a man takes you up to the 20th floor. Another person greets you and usually they already know you are there for a K1 visa, they will tell you to go to wicket B and flip the switch for service. If you don't flip the switch no one will come. Luckily another woman was already there so I just had to wait my turn. When it was my turn he told me to wait so he could go grab my file. He came back and told me I forgot to sign the papers I had faxed in... That confused me because I KNEW I signed my papers.. turns out they were someone elses papers! Make sure the person at wicket B brings back the right file! This person will also open up your medical and ask you a couple questions that are mostly yes or no. Like if you have a criminal record, or if you have had any troubles crossing the border before. He or she will then give you a number and tell you to sit down. They explain everything to you really well.
I was really lucky and only had to wait 20-30 minutes they said usually it could be over 1 hour to wait! I think the most nerve-wracking part was sitting there waiting because you are able to hear everyone else's questions. I had to keep reminding myself to breathe! Also at wicket B I had told the man helping me that the greeter had not let my fiancé in with me, he said that was strange and that he would call downstairs to see if they could find my fiancé and bring him upstairs to be with me. So everytime the door opened to the waiting room I thought it was my fiancé, my heart would start beating even faster!
Finally my number was called and still no fiancé in sight The officer made sure I was there for a K1 visa, took my finger prints and made me take an oath. He asked very simple questions for some reason I kept psyching myself out thinking they would be asking hard trick questions, haha! That is not the case
He asked my age, my fiancés age, how we met, if I had met his parents, what he does for a living, what I do for a living, he asked what evidence I brought and to list what I had he didn't actually want to see anything, he then asked where my fiancé was at the moment and sadly I said he is downstairs waiting they didn't let him inside, then I felt a hand on my shoulder and it was my fiancé!! so I said nevermind he is right here!!! That was such an amazing feeling even the officer smiled a bit and said "full of surprises today!" he then asked about our wedding plans and asked if I had a criminal history, traffic violations etc. He signed and circled a section and that's when I knew he had made is decision and he said those golden words "I have approved your K1 Visa!"
I was in and out of the consulate in just over an hour! All I can say is don't sweat it. If your love is real then you don't have to worry about the questions the answers will be completely natural! Smile during your interview! You're almost at the finish line! Best of luck to everyone. I know this review was long but the detailed reviews I read really helped me out and I am a strong believer in karma, I think someone will appreciate this |

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
