Wife entered through Dallas. There were only 5 people in the waiting area, she went through pretty quickly and she said they didn't ask her any questions. I was suprised at how fast she got through everything, maybe waited about 20 minutes (and then she even breezed through customs, no lines). She will only be here for a week for now.
My stepson is still in Lima, but he should have his consent to leave the country from the court VERY soon. We expect to be all together by early October.
UPDATE - Obtained step-son's consent to travel from the judge and we all came together on Wednesday October 15th :)
My wife had already entered previously so when we got to Miami, only my step-son was processed and he was the first one in line. Everything went smoothly except for customs... my wife brought a lot of food to cook :) |

Embassy Review : |
Interview was at 8:30am, we arrived approximately at 7:40am. I (the petitioner) attended the interview with my wife and stepson.
When we got to the embassy, we noticed there were two lines at first. One for "US citizen" services and another for visas. The visa line was broken up into two lines. First you have to present your documents to show you have an interview, and then there's another line to get into the building. However, we quickly noticed that they were asking for documents that are required for non-immigrant visas. When I got closer to the end of the first line, I showed my interview letters and they sent me to a separate, smaller line to get into the building. They wrote the numbers 21 and 22 on my wife and stepson's interview letters. So basically there was a small line for immigrant visa interviews and a larger line for non-immigrant visa interviews.
Once we got in the building, we went through a security check where we had to turn off our cell phones and leave them at the checkpoint. They give you a small plastic card which you use to pick up your cell phones when you leave. You also have to discard any liquids you may have (my wife took a Sporade and some crackers for my stepson).
Once you get through the security checkpoint, you walk towards this patio and a guy is there who reviews your interview letters. He wrote "with child" on my wife's interview letter and sent us to the door where we would go in to wait for our interview (there was also a waiting area out on the patio but it was for non-immigrant visa applicants). I noticed there was a kiosk that had snacks, sandwiches, and drinks out on the patio.
It took us about 20 minutes to get into the final waiting area. It's a long narrow area with 15 windows. The first 8 are for non-immigrant applicants. The ninth window I'm not sure what was for, but some of the immigrant visa applicants were called to it and some were not. Windows 10-14 were for us, and the 15th window was actually inside a small room where the final interview takes place.
We didn't have a watch so I'm not sure how long we waited, but it was probably about 2 or 3 hours before we got called up for the first time (during that wait time though, an embassy worker came out to the waiting room and had us swear that we were being truthful). We first got called to window 10 and my wife provided her fingerprints as part of the swearing process. Then about 30 minutes later we got called to window 11 where my wife provided both the medical exam results. The lady at that window also asked some brief questions about how and when we met, and how long we were married. She also asked about my stepson and if I was the father. I don't remember if she asked at that point about my stepson's permission to leave the country. She asked if we had any additional proof to provide about our marriage. We gave her photos and some emails we had printed, along with screenshots of skype and facetime logs, facebook posts about our relationship, and a printout of money transfers I had made to my wife. The lady then returned all the photocopies of civil documents I had submitted to the NVC in the IV packages.
From there, we expected to be called to window 15 (the small interview room) based on how everyone else was being called up. We actually got called back up to window 11 and there was a different lady. She said there was a problem with the fingerprint system. She said we could wait there, leave and come back later, or come back another day since she was not sure when the system would be back up. We decided to wait and stay. She then said she would go ahead and interview us and then wait to see if the system came back up. She asked us the same questions as the first lady from window 11, but dug a little deeper (she wanted to know how it was that we met). She also asked about my stepson's permission to leave the country. My wife told her about how we had started the case in court and that they were on strike until the same day of our interview. My wife had brought copies of documents we presented at court and told the lady about them but the lady did not ask for them when my wife mentioned the documents. The lady had also told us that we were missing a document for my stepson's IV package, which was an original marriage certificate. I told her that the NVC did not request one for my stepson's IV package. I gave her the photocopy of the marriage certificate (from the documents the first lady at window 11 returned to me). She said that normally an original certificate was required unless the cases were "tied" together (I didn't understand this because I submitted the petitions together), but she accepted the photocopy after seeing the original in my wife's IV package. She asked my stepson how old he was, which was the only question she asked directed to him. At the end of the interview the lady said everything was "ok" with my wife's petition and that she just needed to review my stepson's case, and we also needed to wait for the system to come back online. At that point, I didn't realize she meant that my wife's visa was approved.
We waited about another 15 minutes. We sat straight across from the window of the lady who interview us so instead of calling us back up through the intercom, she just waved us back up to the window. My wife put in her fingerprints and the lady said both our visas were approved. She handed us a sheet for each my wife and stepson with instructions on how to register for DHL in order to pick up the visas. I was in shock.. totally was not expecting it because everything seemed so simple, but it was a great relief!
The bad: The first two ladies were very "cold". The lady who returned the photocopies of our civil documents literally threw them through the slot in the window. The final lady who interviewed us was awesome though. The only other complaint was the wait time, mostly because it was not clear if they were going in order and we were worried about even going to the bathroom in fear that we would get called up. For that reason, we basically starved all morning. |

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
