Consulate Review: Dominican Republic
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : January 8, 2014
Embassy Review : Sorry for the late review. I've been trying to do one but with the trip and all the excitement I just couldn't find the time to do so. Here goes..

The night before the interview my fiance and I barely slept. I kept reciting in my head all the questions we might be asked. We slept for about an hour and half and at about 3:30 am we headed out to la capital. We live in La Vega so it was about a good one and a half hour drive there. Good thing there was no traffic!! But there was so much fog!! I thought we would never get there. At about 5am we arrived at the consulado. There are buscones everywhere telling you where to go!!! I was so annoyed because I had read all about them from reviews and all..so my dad, who drove us there, was paying attention to what the buscon was telling him we needed to do. He was saying something about pictures needed to be stapled to the forms and if you didn't have them stapled you would be sent back..(which is a big lie)!! I didn't have any of the 2x2 pictures stapled to the forms (the lady that asked for the forms stapled them)..But anyway, we were in line by about 5:15 am and there was a good 20 people in front of us already. I believe the line started moving like around 6:20 am. When I was closer to the doors, we were asked to take out our cita letter and when it was our turn up the line, the guy took the letter, stapled a number to it and gave me number 266. As most of you probably already read, woman and men and separated. **If you are a female, try not to take a purse** Things go much more faster that way. I didn't have a purse so I was put in the men's line and things went by quicker.

After we got checked we sat down and waited for about 15 minutes until we got called the first time to window 18. We handed in all of our DS forms and she also asked me for his acta de nacimiento, banco popular receipts and the police report. She told us there was a problem with one of our forms..she sent my fiance to window 14 I think it was to pay the $80 USD remaining for the visa..I had forgotten to include his second last name (y caro que nos salio)..so anyway I'm thinking "oh boy what now." She gave us a little green pass so we can go outside to one of the buscones (and told us to go straight to window 18 when finished) and there they took us to un centro to have the form fixed. When we get there we started "fixing" the form she wanted fixed which was DS156. I was looking at a copy of the form I had in my binder and I'm thinking to myself "there's nothing to fix here wth does she want fixed?!?!"..but anyway I told myself, "let's do it anyway because ella quiso que lo arreglaran y no voy a discutir." So we printed the form out and it cost 3,000 pesos just for that one form. Super expensive!!! We started walking back to the embassy and we had to make a short line to go back inside. We're walking to window 18 and I start feeling a rush of emotions. At this point I felt so sick. We get to the window and handed her the form. She took and and looked at me like I had three heads. So I asked her what was wrong..she says "este no era el formulario que te pedi" I was like huh?! "como va ser si ese fue el que usted escribio en el pase que queria que arreglara"..she took the pass and noticed she had written the wrong DS form down...she scribbled DS156 out and wrote DS160. I was so annoyed I wanted to yell a million and one things at her for making a mistake. She didn't even apologize and that ticked me off in so many ways. We went back outside and walked to the centro to have form DS160 fixed. When we get there the lady behind the computer tells us it'll be 6,000 pesos to have it fixed. I was like pero tu estas loca o que te pasa..we had just paid 3,000 pesos for the other form y por esa querian tanto dinero and it was just to add a last name to it..luckily I had the confirmation number and was able to fix it that way instead of having the whole thing filled out. They charged us 1,800 pesos for adding the name..That's so absurd!! Ellos se aprovechan de la situacion y te cobran un dineral because they know you HAVE to do it. When we got back to window 18 I handed her the confirmation page for form 160. She said everything seemed fine and told us to sit back down and that our number would be called shortly.

We sat and waited for about 20 minutes until our number was called to window 15 I believe (don't remember the exact window)..there they took his fingerprints and told us to sit back down and that the next time we were going to be called was the for the interview. Maybe about 30 minutes went by until we finally got called for our interview to window 17. We took a deep breath and walked up. The consul was a Caucasian male maybe about 35 years old. He swore us in and asked us the following questions:

To my fiance:
1. How old was I..
2. Who I lived with here in the U.S..
3. Where I worked at..
4. How much our engagement ring cost and if he had the receipt (we didn't)

To me:
1. How many times I've been to D.R. after filing the petition..
2. How much I make a year..
3. If my fiance had any family members here in the U.S..
4. He asked to see pictures. I handed him about 100+ pictures and he wanted to see more, but I had them in the album and he said it was okay.
He didn't ask much..he started laughing and making jokes. I was so relieved when he said he was going to approve the visa!!

I want to thank everyone here in VisaJourney, special thanks to MrTee!! I wouldn't have made it this far without your help and patience!! THANK YOU so much!!

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
