AOS from B2 visa (more than 180 days overstay)
Interview in Fairfax, VA----Scheduled appointment time was 9:30 AM
We arrived at 9:05 AM and passed quickly through security, handed the notice to the desk woman who told us to take a sit and wait for our name to be called. At 9:10 AM, we were seated among a lot of couples, some with attorneys and others with kids. The mood seemed relaxed.
At 9:50 AM, we were called by a white male in his early thirty, who somehow seemed more nervous than we were. He led us to his office and swore us in before we sat down. He shuffled through our application then he asked for our passports and other state issued IDs.He wrote a couple of notes on a sheet of paper, did more paper shuffling, asked if we were still living at the same address, then he asked how did we meet. Since he was not looking at any of us in particular,I asked him who should answer the question; he replied who ever felt like it could do so. I explained that we met online, he then asked how long before we met in person (four weeks). Next, he inquired about the date we moved together, which was roughly a year after we met.
In the middle of the interview, a lady peeked through the door and told him to log off the computer; I was thinking --oh no, what’s up? He logged off, turned back to us and he asked if we did have additional documents. I explained we didn’t have too many because all utilities were included in the condo fees and we were waiting to conclude the process before we could add the spouse to the mortgage (it requires refinancing). We had sent a joint bank account, a joint internet access bill (only utility not included in the condo fees) and ten picture samples with the application.
He asked if we had more pictures,looked through them and wondered if we did go on a honeymoon. I explained we had a short trip to Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks in North Carolina but the honeymoon had been postponed because the wife is pregnant. He said ok and proceeded to ask the litany of “yes-no” questions on the I-485. At the end he told us that he couldn’t give us an update because the computer system was down but if we could wait in the main room for ten minutes he would be able to clear us. The interview took about 20 minutes.
We were not asked the usual questions about spouse’s birthdates or parent’s name.
I should mention that although he asked to see the I-94, he stamped the color copy we had included and returned the original to us. We received the EAD approval notice only three days before the interview but he never mentioned it.
In the hallway, we saw the same lady doing the rounds and verifying that all the IOs had logged off the system.
We went back to the waiting room and ten minutes later, the IO came back to let us know to expect the GC within a month. By 10:30 AM, we were out of the building. In the afternoon, I received an email confirming we had been approved.
