Consulate Review: Dominican Republic
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : October 22, 2012
Embassy Review : My experience was fairly easy, & quick. I arrived in the DR on Tuesday night around 7pm, and we drove to the Teatro Del Jardines hotel to spend the night. It was a beautiful place with wonderful people there & great security. On the morning of the interview (Wednesday October 3rd, 2012), we arrived at the consulate around 6:30am. After that, I'm not definite on times since I didn't really pay attention. We first saw some friends (Scarlet & Angel) and got to meet them in person for the first time! That was nice to see some familiar smiling faces We then got in line & walked, & walked until we were met by a man who gave us our number (69). We then got to the front where we were separated into our own lines (of course men go faster). It was a little nerve wracking since I have a pacemaker & am not supposed to go through the security scanner, but they assured me that there would be no problem (and so far my pacemaker is still working!). After going through security, my fiance & I found a seat & waited. After a while we were called to window #16 to bring our documents. She started to ask for things, but then I handed her everything she needed without her even stating each document. After that, we were told to go to window #14 to pay our fee. I was glad that they took credit cards, because I was counting on that! After paying, we brought our receipt back to window 16, and then returned to our seats. While looking through our stuff, I realized that she did not ask for a picture, nor did we give her one. I had my fiance return to the window & ask her if she needed that. She thanked him & said that she had forgotten it, and was glad that he brought it up to her (who knows how long that could have delayed us!!!!). After some more waiting, we got called up for fingerprints. No problems there, and then we went back to sit down. Grabbed some water on the way back (was very thirsty), and then waited some more. While we were waiting, another vj couple that we knew got called up for their interview, and then I got nervous when they sat back down saying that the interviewer needed to review it & that they would be called back up!!! Shortly after that, we were called to window 26 where an American man was waiting for us. He asked me if I spoke spanish: not very well- then asked my fiance if he spoke english: yes. Do you mind if I do the interview in english: no, that would be fine. He asked us how we met, what we both do for a living, how long we have known each other, how long we have known each other as boyfriend/girlfriend, and then asked for pictures. While looking through the pictures, he kind of made a funny face and asked me, "is this you"? Well, I kind of laughed and said yes, because in the pictures I weighed quite a bit more than I do now. He then asked questions about my previous marriage, and how the dates overlapped. I explained to him that my ex & I were separated for two years before our divorce became final, and he was satisfied with that answer. He also asked my fiance why the last petition wasn't followed through on. Note: we filed for the K1 back in 2009, & then after being approved, never followed through with the consulate interview: My fiance explained to him that he was scared, and that he had never known life outside of his family & his country, but he is sure that this is now what he wants to do. The guy was satisfied with that answer. As I looked back over the interview, I realize that the green paper was there all along, but because of nerves I never noticed it. He also asked about our wedding plans: we didn't have any specifics at that time, just some ideas about what we were thinking about doing. He was satisfied with that answer... Also asked if we had children together. He did ask how many times we have seen each other since we have officially been together (not very many times or for very long). He asked how we communicate... During the interview, my fiance & I took turns answering. Just depended on who started answering first He then stated that he was approving our visa... I think with a combination of nerves & just being anxious, it didn't really hit me (maybe it was also that I had faith that it would be approved), & then I worried about my reaction LOL.. but it didn't matter because it was already approved. My fiance looked at me like, ummm, did you hear him?? He said it's approved LOL Anyway, we went to Domex to pay and while he waited I went & shared the good news with my awesome vj friends Scarlet & Lisandra & their fiances (who also got approved). In total, we were there for about 4 hours. Not bad at all!! javascript:emoticon('')

As far as receiving the visa from Domex goes, that's another story. They told my fiance 1 week. After one week, he called & then they told him that it could be up to 6 weeks. Well, I took work off & made plans for him to get here on November 15th so I was starting to get worried. Eventually after him calling all of the time, it was ready for pick up two weeks after the interview. The visa & paperwork is now with him, & he will be arriving here in 25 days. We have made plans for a December 30th wedding, and that will certainly help with getting money back from taxes (& for aos). If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!! I hope my review helped!! javascript:emoticon('')

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
