My fiance just called me from Johannesburg to give me the play by play of his K1 interview this afternoon. Below is a synopsis of the day. I made this as detailed as possible, in case the information was of help to anyone else going through this process.
A few hours before the interview, he stopped by the doctor's office to pick up his medical report. He was given the packet for consulate, as well as a personal copy of DS-3025, Vaccination Documentation Worksheet. I do not know if they provide copies to everyone, as we had specifically requested to receive a copy for ourselves. [And while not directly related to a "consulate review", I must say the staff at the office of Dr. Hugh Boss, and the doctor himself, are warm, extremely helpful, and very accommodating. We had called in advance to find out what paperwork we needed to bring. They gave us a complete list, including form numbers, which we were able to download online and then fill out in advance to bring on his appointment day.]
He arrived an hour ahead of his appointment time, which turned out to be a waste of time. They didn't open the doors until the appointment time, and it wasn't crowded. He was only a few people back in line when it opened. The security check was one by one, but went really fast. They took his medical results at security.
Once through security, he waited 5-10 minutes before they called his name to the first desk. They took his police certificate, birth certificate, the DS forms, passport, photos, and I-134 information, and then did biometrics. He then headed to the cashier to pay the $240 interview fee.
He was directed to sit near Window 7 to wait for his name to be called. He waited about 15 minutes. There was one person and one family before him. The consular office then called his name, and he had to take an oath that all the information he would give would be true and correct, and that he intended to marry once he entered the US.
He was asked the following questions:
How did you meet? (online)
Do you talk on Skype often? (yes)
How did you go about meeting in person? (we went to Europe together)
How long did you stay there? (two weeks)
What did you do there? (tourist stuff)
You have quite an age difference. Does it affect you guys in anyway? Any issues? (no - we have 17-year age difference, older female)
Where does she work? What does she do?
Where does she live?
At many times, he was in the middle of giving detailed answers, and the officer would stop him and say "That's enough". He was not asked for any of our original documentation, nor for further proof of our relationship. (I heavily, heavily, heavily, frontloaded the initial application with three years of our relationship because of our age difference).
After answering the question about where I live, the officer began to give him instructions on how to pick up his visa. He told me that he was caught off guard by how abrupt it was. He asked him, "so am I approved?" The officer said "yes you are" and laughed a little. The officer then helped him with his pick-up arrangements, and returned all of the photos I had submitted with the original application.
The entire interview took about 15-20 minutes. All in all, it took just about an hour from the doors opening until the time he left. |
