Consulate Review: Sydney, Australia
Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : July 11, 2012
Embassy Review : My visa interview was scheduled for 31 July (case closed on 1 June). I emailed several times to ask them to reschedule, which was finally done one week before the interview.

The interview was July 10th 2012.

Flew to Sydney from Melbourne the day before as Interview was scheduled for 8am
Arrived at the consulate (with husband and son) at 7:30am
Large food court at the bottom of the building where we had ham and cheese croissants and OJ
Went up to level 10 at 7:30am when the consulate reception opens
(small point to note - if you have small children or a weak bladder, make sure you use the restroom before you go through security - there are no bathrooms in the consulate at all)
Was third in line going through security - have your passports out and ready (they didn't need the interview letter at all)
Proceed through security and leave all bags on level 10
You can only take paperwork and your wallet
Wait to be called to the lift that takes you to level 59 (yes it's fast but not noticeably so)
Was the first out of the lift to the security screen - handed over passports and buzzed through the heavy door (it's not that heavy really)
Took a number as instructed for the immigrant visa and sat down
Was called to counter 4 at 7:45am
Asked to get out documents that I knew needed to be submitted, did that, even though she didn't ask for them.
She handed back my civil documents (all in order) and told me she was going to review the packet and to take a seat until called again
Sat for another 25 mins and was called back to counter 4. She told us that the packet was in order and that I would be called up to another window for the interview. She had the little white approval slip in her hand and said, "all things going well, you will be approved and handed this piece of paper" (I figured that was good news as she had already filled it out with our names on it).
Sat for another half an hour and then was called to counter 1.
The lady interviewing was American and she was strange. Obviously trained not to smile or give any indication of whether the interview was going well or not.
She said:
The interview will be conducted in two parts, first formal questions and then questions about your relationship. The questions that she asked (that I can remember) are:

- did you complete all documentation yourself?
- when do you plan on leaving for the US?
- what is the longest stay you have had in the US?
- what was the nature of your visits?
- How many times have you been to the US?
- do you verify the information in this form (DS 230) is true and correct?
- please sign the form here.

Relationship Questions:
- have you been married before?
- do you have children to that relationship?
- are they US citizens? How?
- when did you get divorced? - exact date?
- Has your current husband been married before?
- when was he divorced (she asked this directly to him)
- when did you two meet?
- how did you meet?
- explain the situation as you were both married to other people at the time?
- do you have children together?
- how old is he? she asked this directly to my son who raised his 4 fingers - cute. this made her smile a little
- how do you plan to support yourself over there?
(at this point she checked our affidavit of sport and interestingly our joint sponsors details were not included in the packet. she told us that we qualified on assets alone which was nice to know)

She then said:

"I have good news! documentarily we have all we need to approve your visa. You should recieve it in the next five days, so by next Tuesday. I am satisfied that this is clearly a bonafide relationship after all this time - we've been together almost a decade'

She handed us the little while approval slip that the other lady filled out and we were on our way. Oh she also asked for feedback about the medical which i thought was interesting because I had some negative feedback to give. She noted that and apologized for the bad experience. At the end she asked if I had any questions, and we were on our way. All done and dusted by 9:30pm (just under 2 hours).

I think our interview was longer and more complicated because I was maried before to a USC.

Good luck to all of you who are about to embark on this part of the process - you are almost there!

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
