Embassy Review : |
My appointment was on the 7th of February at 9.00 am. I arrived about 7.30 and went to Goulds pharmacy to drop off my electronics. I then queued outside the embassy at 7.50 am for around 10 minutes. My passport and appointment letter were checked then I went through security. I was sent out to dispose of a birthday card I had that contained a battery (I hadn't realised) however I didn't need to queue again and was allowed back in. Once in I was given the number I-905 at reception. The embassy reminds me of a big Argos or post office where you sit until your number is called. I waited half an hour (In between there had been what felt like hundreds of N numbers called). At the desk an older English woman was there. Initially she couldn't find my file (I started to worry at that point_ however after 10 minutes she came back with it. The woman was friendly and chatted away, very laid back. She took my prints, then gradually my visa fee letter, passport photos, birth certificate and copy, police certificate and copy and my I-134 affidavit of support. I gave the woman a co sponsor one as ell. I don't think I needed to in all honesty (my fiancée makes a few thousand dollars more than the threshold) but I wanted peace of mind. The woman just made conversation, commenting on my employment, asking my middle name and joking that I am going from poor weather to poor weather (Glasgow to Seattle). By mistake she almost made me sign a form that enrols me to national service should the U.S ever decide to action it as i'm 23 and anyone under 26 is supposed to). However, after double checking it turns out I fill this form in the states after my marriage. She then told me the desk I would be going to when I was called up again and gave me a pink courier slip to fill out whilst I waited.
After about an hour I was called again. Thousands of N numbers called again and an even rarer E number. I saw an older couple who assume was I-903 coming out all smiles and tears then paying for their delivery which filled me with optimism and determination as the wait was terrifying!!!
The American officer at the next booth was nice enough. He took my prints again then made me swear an oath with my right hand that I was telling the truth. He then asked me:
How I met my Fiancée?
When did I meet her?
Did my cousin still live in Seattle? (My fiancée is her friend)
What did she do for a living?
He then commented that she was married before and asked me:
Why did her previous marriage end?
How long was she single before she met me?
What gender was her kids?
Her kids names?
Her kids interests and ages?
Did I get on with her ex husband, did she? How often does her ex see the kids, will that change when I'm over.
He also mentioned that my fiancée is 9 years older than me which I confirmed.
He finally asked when I was heading over and where our wedding was- I said I hadn't booked a flight as I didn't want to appear presumptuous and told him the venue.
And finally wanted to know who the co-sponsor was on my affidavit (my fiancées step father).
After that he smiled and said I am more than happy to approve your application. Can you please go to the courier desk and pay the fee, to which I replied you have made my day :P.
NB: It may appear above that the interview was like an interrogation, it couldn't have been further from the truth. The interview was very informal and the questions came up during conversation rather than fired at me. I was expecting extra questioning because of our age difference to be honest, I just answered everything truthfully and the interviewer was friendly enough.
Now to get married :D |

Embassy Review : |
Interview was scheduled for 8am on the 3/9/2016. I arrived at 7.30am and went through security and checked in. Around 8.05am I was called for my appointment.
I was asked to raise my hand and swear that I would tell the truth. I then sat down and was asked for my drivers license, Green card, appointment letter and passport The interviewer was very pleasant and made it feel almost like a formality. He explained he was going to go over the application then do the written, reading and civics test.
He went through the application, checking my name, D.o.b, wife's name, her ex husbands, name, my kids and step kids names and my address. He then went through the checklist of questions such as am I a habitual drunkard etc. Then asked me when I left the country on vacation. We chatted about Mexico and he said he had been to Cancun and despite him being Mexican American, barely had to speak Spanish as everyone wanted to talk English.
He then asked me to read the second line from 3 potential lines. I think it said George Washington was our first president. He then asked me to write a sentence, similar to the line above.
For the civics tests he asked: When was the constitution written, what ocean is on the East Coast, What state borders Canada, how many senators are there, what is freedom of religion, who has to register for select service.
He then said I had passed and offered me an oath ceremony at 1pm the same day. I couldn't do it that day as I had work and have an upcoming vacation in 4 weeks abroad and so was worried about getting a US passport on time. He said not to worry and he'd request for me not to have my oath ceremony until after my vacation and to use my UK passport and green card until then but that I wouldn't be quite a US citizen until the oath.
My interview was based on 3 years of marriage. I was not asked to show any other evidence other than what I had submitted (tax returns, joint bank accounts, insurance, previous trips etc). The officer said this was because we had a child together and he had a copy of the birth certificate but that if we didn't have a child together he'd probably have asked for other evidence.
The officer was very polite, very reassuring and helpful with any questions I had for him. The interview lasted about 15/20 minutes and I was given a piece of paper confirming the citizenship recommendation. Very positive experience! |

Timeline Comments: None yet, be the first!
*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
