Consulate Review: Montreal, Canada

Event Description

Embassy Review : We had a very pleasant time at the Consulate in Montreal Of course we did we got APPROVED! So lets start from the begining.

Our appointment was for 9am and we decided to get to the consulate a little after 7am. Once we got there it was about 715am and we got in line for the chilly wait. We were about 8th in line. I am not honestly sure what time the guards open the door because we didn't have our cellphones so I will take a guess at about 745am.

Once the doors opened the guard allowed one person/couple in at a time and then the rejections started. There were 3 people ahead of us who had various rejections at the door. No confirmation page, too big of a bag ect. Luckily enough we had all of our stuff in order and we got in about 10 minutes after the doors opened. Once inside a woman asked to see my passport and my appointment page then my fiance and I moved onto the scanner. It's pretty much just like an airport.. take off your jacket nothing in your pockets, no belts you know the usual. Made it through no problems. One of the guards then directed us downstairs to a waiting room with an elevator.

Once in the waiting room we got as close as we could to the elevator and waited. People from outside slowly filed in and after about 20 minutes of waiting a guard came and got the elevator for us. We crammed as many people on the elevator as we could. SUCK IT IN! lol. Once upstairs we were directed to window 14B to get a number. Easy peasy we showed our appointment letter, stated we were applying for a K1 visa and we received C5!
(so just because you are not first in line outside does not mean you will be last in line upstairs.)

We took a seat and finally a clock! it was about 830am and not 10 minutes went by and they started calling numbers. Once we got called (which was about 15 or 20 minutes after we sat down)we went to window 10. A very nice man asked for my medical my appointment letter to confirm payment online, and took my fingerprints. He also asked me if any of my original paperwork had changed, ya know addresses phone numbers etc. 5 minutes and we were back sitting down.

about 5 minutes went by and we were called to window 9. We were met by a different gentleman who asked us some questions like when are you getting married, how did you meet, stuff like that. He also asked for our I-134, Christopher's tax return, and the intent to marry. After we gave him these documents we were asked to return to the waiting room while they worked on my file.

We had just sat down then all of a sudden I hear my name called over the PA system to return to booth 9 and my heart drops. We returned to booth 9 to the same gentleman as before and he points to my DS-156 form and says who is this? He is pointing to my mothers name and I answer my mother. She was born in the United States and is a Permanent Resident of Canada and has been since she was 16 years old. There seemed to be a hiccup in that I could already be a US citizen which in case they would not be able to issue me a visa!
Now fortunately enough for me we had looked into this option before going the K1 route. We had spoken to someone at the Ottawa embassy who determined my mom was not eligible and suggested because we were already engaged to go the K1 route. My mom was actually about 3 months short of being eligible and he said alright we will take your word for it. CRISIS AVERTED.

We went back and sat down and my finace graciously calmed me down cause I had myself convinced we weren't going to get approved after that. After about 20 minutes of waiting and seeing 3 people before us get their approved letters we got called back to booth 8 for interview time!

We got to booth 8 and a nice new gentleman greeted us, welcomed us to the US consulate and asked us how we were doing. He swore us in, verified my fingerprints then we just casually chatted. He verified we were who we said we were. He then asked us how we met and when we planned on getting married. He asked us to elaborate on how we met because we met online but not through a dating website. I was worried he wouldn't understand because my finace and I are both very avid gamers and met through a gaming community and usually people don't get it. But everything was fine, he took some notes and my finace and I chatted a bit while he typed and then he said those words everyone wants to hear. "Alright, I am approving your visa. Congratulations!" I smiled, did a little dance thanked the man, took my Welcome to the United States letter and we left.

I danced all the way back to the hotel while singing "Everyday I'm Shufflin'".

Just a note, after we left the Consulate I realized that they didn't ask for my pictures, or the I-864 which were both on the checklist. Weird, I guess they really just didn't need them. They also didn't ask for any proof that we had a ongoing relationship, no pictures, nothing.

Anywho I hope this helps someone who has a future appointment at Montreal. It was very nice there and no problems at all. So Good Luck to anyone in the future!!!

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
