Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : October 23, 2013
Embassy Review : Wednesday 23rd October 2013 - Interview Appointment for K-1 Visa

I travelled to the embassy by train, the Bond Street Station. It's about a 5 - 10 minute walk to the embassy and a nice straight forward route. I got to the embassy at about 7:30 am for my 8:30 time slot after dropping off my phone at Gould Pharmacy. I joined the queue outside where they asked to see my passport and interview letter before they usher you through the security hut. You then follow the building round to the right and go into the main doors where the reception desk will ask for your interview letter again and then give you your appointment number for the day. Once you have that, you head up the stairs on your left and go into the waiting area.

I wasn't expecting a short stay but it wasn't too bad overall. Upon sitting down it became clear there was a slight problem with their speaker system that was calling out the numbers, it kept cutting out and made it hard to understand, though they quickly switched on a visual notice board on the big screens which took over the calling of numbers.
After about 30 minutes my number was called to go to one of the many desks on the side. I was seen by a lady who I have read about on here before, a middle-aged asian lady who is very softly spoken. I was already cursing my luck because I am slightly hard of hearing which didn't help when she started casually chatting to me, at which point I was having to smile, nod and agree, but it all went well. I handed her the I-134 and supporting evidence, my police and birth certificates (which would be handed back to me at my second call-up) and 2 passport photos, though because I already applied some to my forms I sent in, they weren't needed so I got them back. A total of bout 4 or 5 minutes was spent at the desk before being asked to sit back down and wait to be called up again.

After about another 30 - 40 minutes my number comes up again and was called to the other row of desks that are separate from the main waiting area where I met a young american man, looked about my age (late 20's) who coincidentally had matching facial hair with me which I chuckled about in my head but made no comment. He was very friendly and well spoken and asked some basic questions:
*How are you today? - Always a good starter
*Tell me about your fiancee, how did you first meet and first meet in person
*Does she work? What does she do?
*Tell me about her siblings, does she have any?
*Oh she has a brother? What does he do?

While I briefly talked to him about her brother, he abruptly (but not intrusively) started looking around his desk and his file holder for something. I finished talking as he kept looking. He then stepped away from his side of the desk to talk to someone else behind him, though I couldn't hear what was said. He quickly came back to me and apologised for the interruption and casually told me that my visa has been approved and that he was just looking for a pamphlet about the following step, the Adjustment of Status, but he then said "I don't think we need to worry about that as you have clearly done all your research on it" to which I affirmed.

And with that, he concluded my interview and my time at the embassy, I put my coat back on and made my way out of the exit door behind where we were talking and promptly collected my phone from the pharmacy to call my fiancée with the news. I had checked in and got my assigned number at 7:52am and I got out of the embassy at about 9:50am, so all in all the whole affair took just a couple of hours.

In conclusion, I give my experience a 5, to be specific it would be a 4.9 but only because of the speaker issue, but they had a covering system with their big screen in the waiting area which they used predominantly after few other interviewees complained to the desk staff about it. :P

A FEW TIPS!
* Get to the embassy early before your time on your letter, it's always a benefit to get there early to avoid any delays.

* Wear comfortable clothing: Their metal detectors are very sensitive and even belts or braces/suspenders with tiny bits of metal will set it off and you'll have to take them off. There is no need to wear formal clothing so feel free to wear some sweatpants or whatever!

*Bring a book: They have some videos about America showing on the big screen but the volume isn't really audible, so if you want something to pass the time, bring a book, newspaper, crossword, magazine, anything NON ELECTRONIC with you.

*Deposit all electronics and prohibited items at Gould Pharmacy or with a person you trust outside. The Pharmacy has a list of the prohibited items they will go through with you and the embassy security staff suggest depositing with them too.

*Don't sweat it! If you've got to this stage, you should be on the ball and have all your required paperwork together for this appointment, with that there's nothing to be worried about. It might still feel a bit intimidating but once you are done and out, I'll bet you'll think to yourself you were being silly.

All the best to all future interviewees!
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
