Consulate Review: Montreal, Canada
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : November 30, 2011
Embassy Review : Well, I figured it's best I write a review since these were so helpful to me.

My interview was on Nov. 29, 2011 at 8am. I arrived at the consulate at 7:15am to find at least 4-5 people before me in the line. Make sure you check the weather before you go for the interview, I unfortunately got caught in the rain. Thankfully I was only waiting 15 minutes so I didn't get too wet.

We got let in at 7:30 one by one. Have your appointment confirmation letter, DS160 confirmation page with bar code, and passport out. Security is fairly fast and simple. You cannot bring a cell phone into the consulate with you, but I had brought mine because I needed to call my ride afterwards, I had no other option. So what they do if you do bring a cell phone is they ask you to shut it off, and keep it at security for you. You get a ticket which you can hand in when you leave to get your phone back.

They asked me to go down the stairs and wait at the elevator. Eventually a security guy came and asked us to get into the elevator. Once we got out of the elevator, we formed a line at the cashier window. At that window they give you little pieces of paper, 2 usually, that have a letter and a number on it. I ended up with C5.

The first time I got called up they asked me to submit all my documents. I had to ask which she needed specifically since I'd brought a huge bag of documents with me. I had to hand in: copy of my birth certificate, the affidavit of support and the documents required with it, my fiance's letter of intent, and a few other items that escape my memory now. Then they took my fingerprints and asked me to go back to the waiting room.

The second time I got called up, it was the nice lady with the dreadlocks. She was very calm. She swore me in and confirmed my fingerprints by taking in a print of my index finger. I was a nervous wreck of course and every time she asked a question I would babble away forever. But she paid attention to everything I said, asked specific questions about my situation, and was generally very nice. The general questions she asked were:

1) How did you meet?
2) Where does your fiance live/where will you be moving to?
3) What does he do for work?
4) How did he propose?

She typed the whole time and after the last question she handed me the paper about immigration to the U.S. across and said, "Your visa has been approved." I got really smiley and thanked her like 3 times.

All in all, being at each window maybe took 10-15 minutes max but the waiting period was just much longer. I started to chat with other people waiting and that made the time go by much faster. I got in at 7:30 and I was out by 9:50 so not bad overall.
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
