Consulate Review: London, United Kingdom
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : October 15, 2012
Embassy Review : I started the day with virtually NO sleep as I was far to excited and worried at the same time, as are most who go through this process.
Probably only getting about 3 hours sleep during the night if that.
I woke up at 4am in the morning had a shower and put on smart casual work place type clothing and made myself look smart for the interview.
Then after a much needed coffee, waited outside for my Taxi to the train station.
I had already bought the tickets in advance to get the train to London and Tube to Bond street close to the Embassy. This saved me a lot of worry about trying to get tickets from a machine outside :-)
The train arrived on time and had no problems on the journey. I had to ask the information desk about what tube to get to arrive at Bond Street.
I arrived in plenty of time actually VERY early on purpose, as I needed to find Goulds Pharmacy to store my phone and keys in.
After getting to my first stop the Goulds Pharmacy, I was very impressed they have everything running smooth there. There where four staff sitting at small desks in the front of the store. You simply go to any one of them and hand over your items to be stored. IE. mobile phones, Key Fobs, USB data sticks anything electrical. ETC they have made up large books showing Exactly what you cannot take in with you and are very helpful on making sure you don’t have Anything on you your NOT allowed to take in. The cost for me on the day was Just £3 for my mobile phone and keys. They put them in a sealed bag with your mobile phone number on, making sure you have turned OFF your mobile. Then you sign the pack and take it to the checkout to pay the storage charge. They then give you a Cloak Room ticket with your matching number on to get your pack back later.
Arriving at the Embassy there was already a queue at 7:45am my appointment wasn’t until 9am, so it does pay to go slightly early even though they say don’t arrive until 30mins before your appointment. Joining the queue and waiting nervously, I noticed they had staff checking everyone had the basic documents to get in IE. your Appointment letter, your Passport, and Your MRV receipt. those three items are a must even to get through security checks to get into the building.
After the end of the big queue 4 people at a time are allowed into a smaller queue ready for the next stage of entering the security office.
Once in the security office again 4 people at a time you have to removed coats and watches and belts and hand over and bags you have. These go on a scanner to be checked just like in an airport. You then have to walk through an Airport style security scanner yourself. Unfortunately I set off the Alarms due to my silver chain and Glasses case that I forgot was steel .... I had to go back remove those and walk through again while the items when through the other scanner this time all was good I passed :-)
Once through the security checks you walk round to the side of the Embassy and though the doors to the check in desk. Here you hand over the same papers as before and you receive a number and barcode printed on you paperwork with your unique number on. Then you go into the main waiting area where there is seating if your early :-) There are drinks and snacks available and toilets etc. In the middle of the room are some large LCD screens which constantly show the next number called and the window in which that person has to go to. All very easy and its announced on a PA system as well. I waited for about 30 mins and was then called to window 14 here they then asked for my police certificate and passport and MRV receipt and birth certificate, and the Affidavit of support. Also some basic questions like my Full name etc. :-) all very easy. Then you have your finger prints on both hands and thumbs taken on an electronic scanner. The gentleman was very nice and made me feel at ease. I asked about how long the Visa took if it was approved as we had already (hoping I got it) booked a flight to join my Fiancé with our new life together. He said well normally it is about 7 days.
I was then asked to go back to the waiting room and I would be called in again for the main interview.
After getting back to the main waiting room which was now FULL and I ended up standing up, I just watched the numbers flying up the screen until eventually I was called in by my Full name to window 16 (This seemed to be the one for K1 Visas) there I was greeted again by a nice gentleman, who first asked for my full name then scanned my finger prints again to check it was actually me I guess :-) He then asked some basic questions about me and where I lived. Then asked
How and when did I meet my finance
What was her full name
Had I been married before
Why did my first marriage break down.
Did I have any children from my previous marriage
Why did my fiancé’s marriage break up
Did she have any children
What where her children’s names and how old where they.
Had I ever been to the USA before
Has my fiancé ever been to visit me before.
When did I get divorced
When did my Fiancé get Divorced.
When did my fiancé visit me.
How to we keep in contact at present and what do we do if anything. ( in our case we watch the same tv programs and talk about them)
He then asked name some of the programs you have watched together and talked about.
Where does your fiancé Live is it a house or rented apartment Etc Etc
How big is the place she lives in and describe it for me.
He then asked me about some of the paper work in the huge pile we sent in for the I-129f and picked out a few items and asked what they where for. they where receipts for things we had bought together when my fiancé visited me.
He then asked if I had any photos of my Fiancé and me together not in the I-129f pack which I did :-)
Then I was asked to sign a form with my fiancé’s FULL name and then sign my own name in full below.
Then he handed me the I-129f pack we had sent in and said you can take that with you now, and said I have APRROVED your Visa. Please take your pink form and go to the DX desk in the main waiting room to pay for your Visa Delivery. :-)
Now I am a guy and 50yr old and I can tell you the tears of joy where welling up in my eyes with happiness. I wanted to scream out YES YES YES at the top of my voice. However I gathered up the ton of paperwork Etc and made my way to the waiting room to join the queue of the successful applicants waiting to pay for the Visa pack to be securely delivered to my door. I paid extra for the pack to be delivered by 10am on the day they send it this was £26 in total. £14.80 for the standard delivery then the extra to have it before 10am.
I then left the Embassy and Walked back down to Goulds Pharmacy grinning with the biggest smile ever on my face and needed to get to my phone ASAP to call my fiancé on Skype and text her and let her know the good news :-)

I hope this review may help some of the questions you may be thinking of :-)

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
