Did an early walk-in for my biometrics on 9/22/15.
The Washington Field office failed to notify me of my oath ceremony so I missed it. I had to make an infopass to schedule another one which happened on 9 June 2016. |

My fiancee had her interview on September 2 in Montreal. I drove up to Canada to go with her and we made a vacation out of it since it was a holiday weekend. We stayed at the Hilton Montreal Bonaventure not far from the consulate.
Thanks to VJ forums we were as prepared as we could be. We took a cab from the hotel and arrived at the consulate at 7:00am and were 5th in line. They opened the doors at 7:30. We went through the security check. They held a few things for us that weren't allowed in like an SD card that was in Jenni's purse. They gave us a ticket so that we could pick it up on the way out.
We were directed downstairs and sat in the only two wooden chairs in front of the elevator. We chatted with a few others while waiting for the elevator to be opened. One person was there for her second time. She was denied entry at the border the first time, yikes.
The guard eventually came down to open the elevator and we made our way to the back door and proceeded to the 19th floor. Jenni got in line and was give number C2. Strangely they didn't call the numbers in order. I think we were called after C8.
Once called we headed over to window 11 where we got the lady that wears a thick gold necklace with a cross and several rings on her hands. I remember her from descriptions in other VJ reviews and yes she was very impatient. Jenni was very prepared and had a nice organized folder of each original and copy for every form with tabs. Good thing because even as prepared as she was it wasn't fast enough for this lady. And when Jenni tried to give her a form before asked she was scolded. Geez.
While that was going on I went back to the cashier to pay the $350 U.S. dollars for the k-1 visa and was given a receipt. Then I went back to window 11 and gave the receipt to the lady. After all the forms and passport were collected we were told to go back and wait then someone would call us to window 8 for the interview.
While we were waiting we notice another couple were filling out some forms they forgot to do. We were surprised they were letting them do that as opposed to making them come back. They hadn't done their DS-230. ouch.
Jenni and I were then called up to window 8 and we got the lady with the dreads. I think she was having an off day since she didn't seem her friendly self like other posters described her as. She looked through our forms and ask us a few simple questions like how we met and asked Jenni where I worked. Then gave Jenni the Welcome to the United States letter and we were done.
We were out at about 9:45am. Easy Peasy. Overall an ok experience, except for the impatient lady at booth 11.
To celebrate we found a nice restaurant within walking distance of our hotel called Andiamo. Excellent food and wine. Highly recommended. Then we went back to the hotel and took a swim in the roof top heated pool. The hotel was great, but expensive. We figured we were only doing this once so we might as well make it something to remember. And it certainly was!

Our interview was scheduled for 1:00pm at our local USCIS office in Fairfax, VA. We arrived at 12:50 then got through security and went to the 2nd floor where we checked in with the receptionist there. She stamped our interview letter and told us to find a seat. About 10 minutes later Jenni's name was called and we both walked in to an office with a lady officer that looked very serious and didn't smile. First she swore us in to tell the truth, then she asked for our passports and original birth certificates which we provided. She asked if we brought our lawyer which we didn't so we had to sign an affidavit so that we could continue without him being there. Then she asked for our marriage certificate and my divorce certificate. We were well prepared thanks to VisaJourney!
The interview started with a series of questions directed at me to probe how much I knew about my wife, her family, her job etc. Then she asked similar questions to my wife to see how well she knew me.
Some of the questions were:
What's your wife's full name?
What is her birth date?
Where did you meet?
How did you meet each other?
Did you exchange phone numbers?
When did you start dating?
When did you propose?
When did you get married?
Did your wife live with anyone else when you met her?
How many siblings does she have?
What is her father and mother's first name?
Where do they live?
Did you visit her in Canada and when?
Did she visit you in the U.S. and when?
What's your husband's full name?
What is his birth date?
Where does your husband work?
How long did he work there?
What time does he leave for work?
What time does he get home after work?
How long does it take him to drive there?
Does your husband have kids?
What are their names?
Where do they live?
Have you met them, when and where?
After that she asked for evidence of relationship and we provided statements for our joint credit cards, a letter from our bank stating that we both bank there and have joint accounts, bills that Jenni paid for our house, letters that arrived with both of our names, shared auto insurance documents, etc. She took it all then asked for photos. We gave her some wedding photos and vacation photos and Christmas photos. When she was looking at some of our wedding photos we actually saw a hint of a smile on her face. I said that must be the best part of your job to see all these wedding photos and she nodded. She only kept two photos for the file.
After that the lady started asking all of the standard absurd questions. Are you a prostitute, do you plan on overthrowing the government, etc. The lady was checking off the boxes as fast as Jenni could say no. Once that was over she said, ok, you'll receive your green card in two weeks. Jenni asked, "Is that it?" She said that's it. I asked, "Don't we get a letter or something or instructions on what to do next?" She said, no you just wait for the green card to arrive in the mail.
Seemed strange to walk out of there with nothing to show that we were approved. Plus she took Jenni's I-94 out of her passport. It didn't leave a warm and fuzzy feeling. We'll feel a lot better once the card is in hand.
The good news is that we were well prepared and had everything they asked for so it went very smoothly. It was quite painless.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
