Consulate Review: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : December 13, 2007
Embassy Review : We arrived in Rio the day before our interview so we could pay the Citibank fee and figure out our way around. We stayed at the Windsor Austrias hotel, which is adjacent to the hotel ok and ambassador hotels. The nearest Citibank is on the next parallel street to the hotel(about one block away). We paid our fees, one for me and one for my son and this payment had to be in cash. The day of the interview we woke up at 5:45 and went to breakfast at 6:30. We left the hotel at 7:00 and arrived at the consulate at 7:10. The entrance for visas is on the side of the building and not on the Presidente Wilson entrance. There were two lines, one for non-immigrants and one for immigrants. I recommend asking the security guards which line to get in. At around 7:30 a nice guy came out and checked our names off on a list and wrote down the order in which we were in line. At 7:45 they started to let immigrant visa applicants in and through security. We then went to the second floor to a room and were handed a paper on which to write our contact information in Rio and another paper telling what order to put our papers in. Around 8:15 we were asked to enter one of two windowed booths where a consulate worker checked our documents and put them in order and into a folder for the Consul. We were also handed a number and the asked to return to the seating area to await our number to be called. We were the third couple called and we entered the small room with no windows and were met by a very friendly woman. I had each index finger printed and then we were asked to raise our right hands and swear the information was correct. The Consul seemed pleased that both of us were at the interview. We were asked how we met, when we met and since it was on a website, which one. She then joked about how she had heard of that website quite a few times! My fiancé was asked how many times he had been to Brazil and how long he usually stays each time. Then I was asked if I had ever lived anywhere else in Brazil (other states). She then asked my fiancé what he did in the US for work, and asked me if I intended to work when I get there. She asked me about medical conditions and joked because she couldn't pronounce it in Portuguese. She asked if we were planning a big wedding or a small one and then asked if we hand any other pictures to show her. She returned the pictures and the left for a moment. She returned and congratulated us!! Overall it was much less stressful than we had feared!
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
