Airport experience was super easy. we were both ushered into the screening room, and had to wait a few minutes, then Olesya's biometrics were taken and both our passports were stamped and we were on our way. Maybe we were lucky?? After leaving the airport, NY was not so easy, here's a tip learned the hard way: don't stretch out on the floor and sleep in port authority bus terminal, no matter how long you've been awake already, or the police will become very suspicious!-better yet-spend the extra couple hundred dollars and fly to the midwest instead of going by greyhound! (we had been about a year in India, where sleeping on the ground in transport hubs is totally common)-- reverse culture shock!! |

make sure to frequently check case status online for updates! google 'uscis check status' and enter your receipt number. I missed an undelivered mail for a month for not checking. Problem was I had given our physical address but we receive mail at a PO box. We had to go to anchorage 2 times for biometrics appointments, they didn't know why, possibly fingerprints didn't work the first time. |

We received our approval notice March, 2018, about a year and a half after filing our i-751. August 19, 2018 we called USCIS to inquire about Olesya's green card. Shortly after, we received another approval notice dated August 21, 2018. The next mail day we received an I 797-C Reopen notice. This gave me a panic, thinking there was now a chance the removal of conditions might not be approved. However, it was dated the same day as the 2nd approval notice, and the green card arrived soon after. I think the Reopen happened before the 2nd approval notice on the same day, but we just received them in the mail in reverse order. Check the Notice dates before panicking!
Total time between sending inital fiancee visa package and receiving 10 year green card was just over 5 years. We are glad to FINALLY have this behind us!!!! |

Security screening was hardest part, many people in line and they want you to move fast and expect you to have all your documents in order, etc. Olesya ended up having to leave her camera outside on the ground b/c no place to check electronics. After screening i think it helped a lot that we were together. we had to wait a half hour or more for the interview, but all was comfortable and everyone was very friendly and polite. Interview was very easy, probably due in large part to the fact that we showed up together (not required, but they did have both of us in for the interview, which was conducted in English in our case). I had been away from America for over a year and we travelled around Asia together so we we wouldn't have to spend time apart before Olesya could come home with me! |

From the security guard to biometrics personnel to immigration officers, everyone was extremely polite, friendly, and helpful. If you have a legitimate case, you should have no problems here whatsoever. Very few people were in the office the 3 times we were there and waits were very short. I was nervous due to the seriousness of needing the green card to be able to stay with the love of my life, but these people helped me feel more at ease, and made the process as painless as possible. And a bonus for going all the way to Anchorage (from Homer) for biometrics: Denali NPP is just another day's drive away! spectacular beauty. |

Timeline Comments: 1What a journey! 5 years from sending in our fiancee visa package from Thailand (via my mother in the midwest, thank you, mom!!!) to receiving Olesya's 10 year green card in Alaska. I wish I had worried less during the process! Now our child is 3 years old and we feel like we have finally dropped this burden for good. Still, I've been impressed with how professional and compassionate every single official we have dealt with has been. In our case, USCIS has been kind and competent, even if s l o w....
