Luciana & Josiah Brazil California No Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 2012-03-07 2012-03-09 2012-07-06 2012-07-13 2012-11-05 2012-12-10 2011-03-18 278 We married by proxy *before* being together in person. A requirement for either the K-1 Fiancee Visa or the CR-1 Spouse Visa is to have been together in person. We were not eligible to apply for either visa until 2011-05-27, after being together in person for the first time. I would have gone to be with Lu 5 weeks sooner, as soon as I could (end of school term), which also would have started our visa process 5 weeks sooner, but she insisted I wait for until after an elective surgery for her instead. It then took six weeks (after my return from Brazil, 2012-06-12) and $1,000 to accomplish Lu's change of name in Brazil. I asked Lu to allow us to delay and wait for her name change until after we received her visa, to spare time apart, but she insisted and just did not feel our marriage was valid without it. Thus, we did not fully start preparing our I-130 application until Sep. 2012. The completion of that application took us 6 months of time from that point, under some stresses and delays of things like a new job working far out of town and the death of a parent. However, we know another couple, friends, who went through the CR-1/IR-1 process between the U.S. and Ireland, and it also took them 6 months of time to prepare and send in their I-130. Also, I actually had our application ready 1 month sooner than sent in, but decided at last minute that our application would be stronger (and a non-attorney visa consultant we hired agreed; our case had some out of average weaknesses such as a proxy marriage ceremony and only one trip in person because could not afford more), so we waited 1 extra month solely to get an affidavit from our pastor to strengthen the "bona fides" of our marriage. Our 4-page I-130 application was accompanied by 146 more supporting pages (selected and trimmed down from about 200 total pages), to total a 150-page I-130 application. DS-230, Application for Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration, sent with I-864, Affidavit of Support, to NVC on 2012-08-20. No field to enter date DS-230 sent in--needs a field. 2012-11-06
