Aug 06 -faxed request for interview and paperwork directly to US Interests Section. Definitely helped to move the paperwork! 17 Feb 07 - Called the new USINT toll-free number to Havana, arranged appointment for Vilma for 23 May 2007. 23 May 07 - Interview went OK, but Vilma is required to return again with her CV and transcripts of her educational background as a biologist. 29 Jun 2007 - "The case is currently pending receipt of required clearances. This involves an interagency process that takes place in Washington, D.C... As a result of enhanced homeland security, visa applications are now subject to a greater degree of scrutiny than in the past." 31 July 2007. Vilma finally informs me she can pick up the US K1 visa on 1 Aug. at the USINT (embassy) in Havana. The Cuban visa process is still not finished! 22 Jan 2008. Vilma informs me that she needs for me to contact the USINT to schedule another appointment, to get an extension on her K1 visa. I was able to do this, but she has to wait until 22 May 2008 for the appointment. In the meantime, she is waiting for the "carta de liberacion" from the Cuban government. No one has a clue about how long that will take. A Cuban citizen can not emigrate without the carta. It was necessary to make a renewal of US visa for Vilma at US Interests Section, new appointment is set for 9 July 2009. After that, she will have to finish or renew the Cuban documentation again as some papers expire every 6 months. Hopefully she can leave in October, 2009. 9 July 09 - Vilma went to USINT and applied for renewal of her visa. On 18 Sept 2009, I received info concerning Vilma's delay in the K1 visa renewal. As of this date, the USINT in Havana has her application under "administrative processing" again. This can typically last for 90 days and up to 6 months. 24 Nov 2009 US Visa was approved (again!). Valid for 6 months. Now hopefully the Cuban paperwork will be finished in time. all paperwork is finished finally. Vilma has plane ticket and will arrive on 20 Apr. 2010. We plan to be married in the next month (May). Married in May. EAD issued, this one is good for 1 year (1st one was only good for a few months, I think). The green card interview (Application to Register Permanent Residence) is scheduled in Jan 2011. 11 Jan 11 - interview in Orlando USCIS office. Officer questioned us separately. Didn't like his attitude. Vilma became angry at the agent. They seem to have put our file on ice. Sept. 2011. No word of action for almost 9 months! Contacted local Senator. Got some results after one week of inquiry. Now they want a 2nd interview, sometime in the next 30-60 days. The typical bureaucratic delays again. I thought Cuba was worse, but now I'm not so sure. 2nd green card interview was scheduled on 3 Oct 2011. We had a very nice young woman for the interview this time. A+++ for her helpful attitude! She was very understanding, was fluent in Spanish, and we left the USCIS building with a very positive outlook for our future. | 2012-02-26 | ||
