I arrived at Newark yesterday, flight landed at 6pm. By the time we'd taxied to the terminal and I'd retrieved my wedding dress from the wardrobe at the back of the plane, it was about 6.20pm before I got into the terminal building.
Immigration was the quietest I'd ever seen it; I got straight into a queue with three people in front of me. Amusingly, two of these people were referred to the second room (which I could see right in front of me) so took a little time to get to the window but nothing really.
When I got to the immigration officer, he was friendly and polite but I guess they weren't too stressed with it being quiet. He asked me questions about how I met my fiance, what we both do for work, when we're getting married etc, nothing difficult. Then he took my paperwork and took me through to the second room. Envelope still sealed at this point.
There were a handful of other people in there, most sat quietly but one British guy came in making comments and trying to engage other people. Literally everyone ignored him. He then took his phone out and got told swiftly that he couldn't use it. He started saying that he just wanted to text his girlfriend. No means no!
I could see that one of the officers had opened my envelope and gone through to another room, I guess to process it. He came back about 10 minutes later, called me up, asked me when we planned to get married (made a joke about it not being me and him getting married). Then he made a point of making sure I knew we had to get married within 90 days and sent me on my way.
My fiance got delayed on the way to the airport so I actually beat him through to arrivals, just after 7pm. Easy peasy.
