I got into JFK on Tuesday and was promptly greeted with the choice of two lines titled 'American (residents)' and 'Visitors with Visa'. I was pointed to wait in the latter with my immigration visa and half an hour later or told by the agent in the booth that I was in the wrong line all along and that there is a (secret) third like for people like me.
I was led into a room with about 20 other people and I was wondering how long I'd be here but then realized that the two agents working in there actually worked pretty fast and most of the people waiting were families who got stamped and sent out quickly.
I had to give them my index finger for fingerprints and then sign in a plastic box that was too small for my signature but they didn't care. The agent called me by my first name, checked prints and then stamped the documents in the envelope I had to carry on me (don't put it in your checked luggage!) and my passport. I also had a X-ray from the medical with me but nobody asked.
I was then sent off and told to wait for my social in the mail. Nobody shook hands or said 'Welcome to America'.
The customs officer then asked me where I'm coming from and how long I intend to stay to which I said 'Forever' and he said 'Sounds good', so it all had some kind of comic relief.
I landed at 4:50pm and was on the way home at 6:15pm even with being in the wrong line.
