My husband (then fiancé) was held for over two hours by immigration authorities at the Atlanta airport on May 14, 2013 upon his arrival in the United States. They asked him the same questions over and over, different people asked him the same questions over and over, and they even told him he was lying to them. Of course he wasn't! Why in the world would he lie?! We had "practiced" with a bunch of questions that he could potentially be asked, so he easily answered every question that they had. He speaks English just fine, so it wasn't a matter of misunderstanding. He was very hungry and thirsty and couldn't leave to get anything to eat or drink. He was not smiling or acting happy, and the officers even dared to ask him why he was so serious. He told them that he was tired, and hungry, and thirsty, and he had answered all of their questions correctly many times over and he needed to get to his next flight so he could finally come home to me after over three years being separated. His direct response finally made the officers act, and they let him pass through. It was just a humiliating experience for him, and I hope he never has to go through anything like that ever again.
