We crossed the border by going through customs at YVR, had a 5 minute conversation explaining that we would be "snow birding" back and forth due to our circumstances but didn't have an actual day for our return. The guard was friendly and pleasant, and even showed support for our relationship and empathy towards our complicated situation. We had 2 cats with us and he didn't even ask to see any of the paperwork we had acquired. The change in the DOMA act, however, occurred the following day of June 26th, 2013, though we were unaware of this prior to our trip, especially since we booked out flight 2 months in advance. With this news, we decided to pursue my immigration to the US instead of Canada for personal and family reasons.
