This was my third time through Immigration on a TN status.
The first time (2007) was in Montreal's airport, and was scary just because I'd never done it before. The gentleman reviewed my papers (assembled at ATROCIOUS cost by my employer's lawyer), asked me a couple of questions, and sent me on my way, maybe a half hour total.
The second time (2008) we made the land crossing between Quebec and New York State (not certain what it's called). We went to Montreal for the weekend and applied for a new TN on the way back. Took about 45 minutes, and was a bit more thorough than the original airport crossing. The officer was a bit more suspicious, and asked some pointed questions about my work and my relationship with Katie (girlfriend at the time, now wife). Got through it, but it was more stressful than the first time.
Most recently (2009), I entered at Newark Liberty International Airport (direct flight from St. John's). Easiest, simplest encounter so far. I was the only one in the hall, spoke to a very friendly and efficient officer. He didn't look at my TN letter from my employer at all. He asked two questions: "Are you working at the same place? How long is your application for?" Told him the company name and "one year", and he stamped me and sent me on my way. Easy peasy.
