I had a strange experience renewing my TN, which is supposed to happen only at the Canadian border. There was a man at JFK who insisted he needed to renew my TN, even though I knew he did not need to. He told me he usually worked at another job, and that they were training people in different areas and so he did not know much about things like visas, etc...In the end, what I got was a pro bono extension to my current TN for 8 months He did not know how to enter it into the system, so it wasn't renewed as per the usual year. He was very nice, though.
My advice for TN holders is to carry with you copies of your degree, your resume, job offer and the rules for TN work authorizations if you do leave and return for pleasure via air at non-TN border crossings. It ended up complicating crossing the border again at a regular TN crossing, and I expect questions at the GC interview.
BTW: Immigrants to New York. For Americans/Green Card Holders, JFK is so much more pleasant. For immigrants, I recommend another airport. They separate them out and make them pass AFTER Americans. Their line, at 2AM, was about 150 metres long. I snuck in with my new husband, which was ok.
