Summary: VERY long wait; asked to return with joint sponsor.
Detail: My husband and I arrived at about 7:10 for my 7:30 appointment. The line was long but once I showed my appointment letter to one of the embassy personnel outside, I was directed to a much shorter line. We went through security, waited in the courtyard, and were then directed inside where I was issued a number and my husband instructed to wait in the courtyard. By this time I think it was about 8:30.
I waited for at least 1.5 hours for my number to be displayed on the monitor, for document intake. I am SO glad I carried copies of my civil documents, because I was asked AGAIN for divorce decrees and police certificate... until the agent saw that they already had some of that paperwork. I went back to my seat and waited for at least another hour to for my number to again come up, this time for my interview.
There were 3 consular officers interviewing today: 2 gentlemen, 1 lady. I was interviewed by the lady. She verified my fingerprint, had me sign my DS-230 Part II, then asked me when I got married. I answered, then she had me raise my right hand and swear to the truthfulness of my application etc.
Then she interviewed me:
- Have I been married before? How many times? How did my first marriage end, and why?
- She asked the same for my husband.
- Do I have children?
- Does my husband have children? How many?
- When and how did I meet my husband?
- She asked me to tell her about my wedding. I took that opportunity to show her some pictures.
While I answered her questions, she was typing, AND she cancelled my visitor and work visas. Then she asked more questions:
- What's the longest time I've ever spent in the USA?
- Have I ever traveled to other countries apart from the USA? Where?
- Have I ever lived for more than a year in any other country?
- What other financial documents from my husband do I have for her?
It was at that point that she told me that the ONLY issue they had with my file, was my husband's income as shown on his most recent tax return. She told me that it was below the required level for his household size and advised me to get a joint sponsor ASAP and send the information in for them to review, then have me return with my passport for a 2nd interview.
I was completely surprised, because my husband's CURRENT income is more than enough, which I pointed out to her based on his pay slips and job letters. I also reminded her that we had included in our AOS filing, information about his medical leave and reduced pay last year for major surgery. She said that they do consider current income, but rely on the income on the most recent tax return. She assured me that all I need is a joint sponsor... everything else in my file is good to go.
We're very disappointed at the outcome, but we're working on getting this situation sorted out ASAP. I'm happy that it's not a denial, and that the CO was emphatic that they had no other issues with my case. So we're working hard and trusting God to hang in there until we receive that immigrant visa!
