Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

We went in cheery and positive but nervous. We had to wait about an hour past our interview. I soft-spoken but very serious older Pilipino gentleman named "Denocio" was our officer.

First off I showed him my interim driver's license to show I had finally changed it from my old address. This set off quite an interrogation which didn't go well about my previous address. It is hard to explain, but long story short I still use that as a business mailing address. I fumbled badly as he did his job trying to trip me up about my story. In retrospect I think he was trying to determine if I was still living there and lying about living with my wife.

I continued to be nervous and trip over my answers or just flat out not remember things. My wife, who is usually the nervous one, was calm as can be. I think it came from her numerous bad experiences being harassed at the border! Anyway, at the end she was convinced I had blown the interview, and that they would investigate or flat out reject us.

He noncommittally told us we'd hear something within 7 to 10 days, but just like most people here who were told this, the USCIS website showed i485 "card production" within about 2 hours. That's the magic status that means you're approved. As has been said many times here, no one's application is perfect, but if you have a legitimate relationship, you'll probably be approved.

It was clear from the mountain of evidence: pictures of us together over the year or so it took me to lose 50 pounds of fat, joint accounts, letters to both us from family, etc, that we were a couple. I'm convinced my father's joint sponsorship helped. If anything Mr Denocio was very impressed by our bicycle helmets. He mentioned them twice if not three times. We rode our bikes there and perhaps in his mind, only a real couple would bike to their interview together. Who knows?

Anyway, some people get cheerful officers, some get tenacious inspectors like we did. But if you follow all the advice and guidance on visa journey.com, you'll get through this and you'll be going out and celebrating!
