Consulate / USCIS Member Review #9763

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Review on June 1, 2012:

ISIS AND TROY

Rating:
Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

We stayed in a hotel that had a walking distance of the consulate, it took us 10 minutes of walk with two children (they walk slow), we left fully packed (papers, profs...) we also had nice suits, nothing too fancy but nice, I liked that because when I saw my husband wearing like that I thought to myself "Nobody is going to deny you anything, you look very handsome!" Lol

We didn't take phones nor electronic devices because they are not allowed inside the consulate. We woke up at 4, left the hotel at 5:30am and arrived there before 6am. There was already a couple with two children plus a girl in the line, we were third. A few people arrived after us. They called us inside a little bit after 7am. We went through a room with many seats, turned to the left and got a ladder to the seocnd floor. There was a room with seats, we were asked to sit down and fill out a form with our addresses (mine, my husband's in america and Rio's current address), after that two guys that were sitting called us by my name to a table where they would organize our documents.

There were 4 boxes, two of them there was a guy looking again at all the documents, he called me to box 1, I went there and he had our files from USCIS. He asked me if I have ever been to America before and I said no, then he asked "How come you got married there?" and I said "I got married by proxy, just my husband was present at the ceremony, but I wasn't", he asked for the proxy and I said that the courthouse had it but he could see at the signature lines at the bottom of my wedding certificate that a proxy signed on my behalf, then he complained that the copy I sent to the USCIS was bad and not notarized, I told him that I sent the original to the NVC though, then he said "Ok I will look at that", I showed him that my husband had our marriage certificate legalized in Texas consulate and he kinda liked that, I told him that I was going to take that to the cartorio in my city so it would have legal effects in Brazil. He then asked for the passports and told me to wait till the officer would call me for the interview.

I got out of the box and waited, she then called me by my name, she was in a box with no windows, meaning we couldn't see her from the outide where everybody was, she was very young and beautiful, had kinda of an asian look.

She asked me the following questions:
1) Do you want the interview to be performed in Portuguese or English?
I said: English. She then asked me to swear to tell the truth, I did.

2) Where did you meet your husband?
I said: Over the internet

3) What website?
I said: Brazilcupid.com

4) When was it?
I said: January 2011

5) And then what happened?
I described what happened and told her a briefly explanation of our first meeting.

6) You got married in june of 2011, right?
I said: Yes

7) Why didn't you just got married in Brazil?
I described her my husband's strict work schedule and the redtape they require to get married here, she nodded and he was with me there and interfered saying briefly "That was our best option at that time", she nodded again.

8) You had another ceremony in august right?
I said: Yes and explained her about the whole family being present and we wanting to say our vows in front of God, and that it was a religious ceremony with no legal effects in Brazil. My husband chimed again and said "It was a very nice ceremony" she nodded.

She kept on typing during a lot of time and finally said "I'm gonna approve you, you go to the other buiding and pay the Sedex fee and you should receive your passports in a few days" and we both said "Thank you very much", she smiled and said "Good luck with your new life in America!"

I should say it is a stressfull part of the process, but she was very educated and nice, it helped a lot! I really liked it!
