Specific Notes for Naija K1 visa applicants:
1. Do a good review of your package and familiarize yourself with your fiancé (e) details.
2. Get your packet - DS-156 (2 copies) and DS-156k filled out properly, you can check samples on VJ.
3. Attach passport photograph (50mmX50mm) to the DS-156 to avoid embarrassment as you won’t be allowed to go in with any liquid including glue and stapler. Also have an extra passport on you.
4. Get your interview letter printed and handy with your international passport.
5. Arrange your supporting documents properly having your packets, police certificate, medical certificate, Original birth certificate and a copy closest to you. Use a bag, folder or envelope for easy carriage.
6. Get to the embassy on time at least 40minutes before your scheduled interview time. Keep left of the queue as this will be the line for IV (Immigrant visa).
My Interview Experience:
I went to bed late around 12.30am after my prayers and called my babie before going to bed. I woke up around 02.00am only to realize I couldn’t sleep well as a result of anxiety. I went back to sleep and woke up eventually 03.22am. After taking my prayers and freshening up I eventually embarked on my travel to the embassy but not before calling my babie. I left the house 04.40am and got into a taxi about 04.50am. We journeyed to the embassy that usually take me 2hours or more on traffic days and eventually spent 20minutes on the trip. I got to the embassy at about 05.10am. I met just two applicants waiting for their appointment too. I called my babie briefly and she called me back after which we chatted for couple of minutes before she went to bed.
At about 06.28am we were called to form two separate lines based on our appointment time. The right-hand queue for the NIV was a 06.30am appointment while the left-hand queue for the IV was a 07.00am appointment. I queued appropriately and the security guard on duty made an announcement that no cell phone, sharp object, weapon of any type, make-up powder, neither liquid nor cream is allowed into the embassy. All sealed envelopes must be opened before entrance into the embassy. Despite switching off I was asked to do away with my handset and I had to do that. I gained entrance into the embassy and registered at the gate. I collected a white-data slip, brown slip and payment voucher. I was carrying two bags - a knapsack in which I have an accordion folder bag and a plastic bag containing the second copy of all my documents and medical report. I got seated at the waiting section and was asked to go back severally at the checking point because my laptop bag has lots of pocket and is more of a mobile office for me. I eventually got screened in at the first and second security points. Although we were asked to move in the groups of five I got to the embassy entrance leaving behind other applicants and picked up a machine printed ticket.
Inside the embassy now, I paid at the cashier with my invoice, international passport and $350. My name was called out for documentation immediately. I rushed down to submit my brown paper, packets, Affidavit of support, W2 and IRS records, passport photograph, international passport, original birth certificate and copy. I was asked to take a seat and wait for my interview by the CO.
My ticket number was displayed on the digital board and I proceeded to the cubicle for interview.
