I flew to Moscow from Yekaterinburg and stayed in a Hostel near the US Consulate for my (and my six year old daughter's) K-1 VISA interview. When I arrived I registered for the medical exam and paid $300 ($160 + $120 and $20 for the translation of my daughter's Vaccination Certificate). People in the medical office were friendly.
The next day was free (I wanted to have an extra day in case something was not in order with our medical exams) and we walked around Moscow. It's an expensive city; a ticket to Red Square is 350—700 rubles. In the evening I met a friend from Visa Journey. We found the US Consulate Building and made sure we knew where to go for the Interview.
The following day I met my friend near the Consulate Building. Women with children could go first in line, but I did not want to move forward without my friend. Then there was a screening that took a long time and was tedious. Then we sat, waiting for our interviews.
I was summoned by a young man and he asked me if I wanted the interview to be conducted in English or Russian. I chose English. He looked at the photos I brought and asked me three questions: “Where did you meet? When did you last see him? What does he do for work?” It was a short, pleasant conversation and I felt relaxed. Then he smiled and said congratulations, your VISA is approved. My daughter jumped up and shouted “hello” to him in English and it was funny. He smiled and said “hello” to her.
I was disappointed that he asked only three questions because I wanted to tell him more about my fiance and our relationship. But he said that was enough questions, and that my VISA is approved. Since I'm not flying to USA until 18 January I elected to have my VISA mailed to my home in Russia.
Now I feel calm because this big weight has been lifted from me. My friend also got her VISA, so it was a good day.
