My husband, baby and I went to the Philadelphia field office to adjust status from a K1 visa to a permanent resident. our appointment was at 10am so we arrived at around 9:30. After a search by some friendly and efficient guards we headed to the third floor. There were quite a few people already waiting. I turned in our appointment letter and we sat down. We were joined awhile later by our translator because my husband is not yet proficient in English. We waited until about 11:50 when we were finally called. We saw a couple of couples taken and interviewed separately. Also a few folks with lawyers, maybe 1/5th of all applicants.
Our interviewer was pretty much what I anticipated, not overly friendly, but also not mean.. typical government worker type, if not a bit more educated than other govt workers I've come across. She mentioned that she had a law degree. I don't know if this is standard for this level of officer. She commented on the baby and asked how old she is as we walked to her office. In the office she made us comfortable and we were all sworn to tell the truth. Our translator was asked to sit behind my husband. She asked for his birth certificate and passport, my proof of citizenship and our marriage document.
She asked me how I met my husband. If I had traveled to Haiti for work or pleasure, how many times I went. Then she asked my husband if he was there for the birth of our child. I told her I had a photo from the delivery and she asked for all the photos. These were all photos of the relationship since my hubby got here. She loved our birth announcement photo and said when she was done she was going to show everyone in the office the baby. She did ask if we had any photos of us in Haiti and I said that we had those at the first interview and I hadn't thought to bring them. She asked my husband one-by-one the questions on the AOS form, ie. have you committed a crime, etc. She asked him is address and phone number and asked if i could also be reached there. She said that everything looked good and that we should get the card within 4-6 weeks but that it would probably be sooner than that.
The whole meeting lasted about 15 minutes. We did not give our joint bank statements, rental agreement, or other documents to substantiate our relationship (other than our newborn baby!). I rate the experience a 4 because the wait was really long.
Three hours later I got an email from USCIS saying that the AOS is approved! w00t!
