Rating: | Review Topic: Adjustment of Status
I found these reviews helpful, so i want to share my experience with others. I went in for adjustment of status through marriage; I am European and my husband is American.
Our appointment was at 0900 and we were there more than half an hour early. at about 0840, a lady comes in the waiting room, asking if there was anyone who spoke Spanish. I told her i did, she asked me if I had an appointment , I said "yes" and when she asked me what time my appointment was, I had totally forgotten (haha, I was so anxious) and I said "ten o'clock"!!
So anyway, I was half an hour through the other family's interview when I realized that my appointment was actually at nine o'clock and noticing how the interviewer-lady was just making photocopies (the interview was coming to an end) i asked her if it was ok to leave!!!
My husband, of course told me "Omg, they already called us in and you weren't here, I told them you were translating for someone, but what if they won't interview us any more?" At this point, I was way more relaxed than him, because I had basically sat through another interview.
An African-American gentleman asked us in, he jokingly said that he couldn't find me the first time around, but did say thank you for translating for the other case.
He looked briefly through our folder prepared by the attorney (he was not present) and proceeded with asking me questions like my birth date etc, basically checking off everything i said from a form he had in front of him.
He was very nice, joked a lot and asked me three times where we met, and two times each "is this your first marriage?" and "For how long have you dated before you got married?" He excused himself when he realized at one point that he had asked one of the questions already, blamed it on his age (I am more observant and I believe it was a technique)...anyways, these were easy questions and nothing compared to what we had gone over (his favorite toothpaste brand, the number of clocks in the bedroom etc).
we were prepared with literally everything that ever came in mail from them, double copies and the originals, plus our photo album. he excused himself in order to make copies of the photos and then came back.
He asked me if I wanted to change my maiden name with that occasion and that he was able to change it for me if I wished. I was ecstatic, I said "yes" and he "did" (my green card came in with my maiden name, so right now I think that was a test too, i don't know; i didn't change my last name the fist time around because i was on a student visa and thought i was going to have to change my passport and all the papers through the school etc) He said "thus, your green card will have this last name on it"
you can all imagine that was the last thing i actually remember hearing....he congratulated me and explained that this was provisional and i had to reapply in almost two years and that in three I was able to apply for my citizenship!
I wish good luck to everyone, hope my review helps a little.
Remember, you have nothing to worry about if your marriage is genuine and have all the papers in the folder ready for the interviewer! Don't be anxious! You'll be out in 15 minutes!!!
