First of all I wanted to tell u about the hotel. I stayed at Aeroporto Othon Hotel, its 2 blocks away from the consulate. I recommend it very much, liked the hospitality, the services, the food and all. There are taxis everywhere around. The only bad part is the neighborhood which is not the best, but as long as u pay attention on where u going and hold ur stuff tight on u, everything will be ok.
I got at the consulate by 6:40am and there were some people waiting in the line already. The immigrant visas line up in the back of the consulate on Rua Santa Luzia and the tourists line up on the side at Rua Mexico. Make sure to be in the right line. Also make sure to NOT bring large bags, cell phone or electronic devices, cuz they are not allowed in. If somehow you forget, there are some people offering to lock your stuff somewhere, but I personally wouldn’t recommend. By 7am a lady came out and had the names of the immigrant visa applicants. She asked to see the photos and then checked your name off and gives you piece of paper with a code that you fill out later. A lot of people had to take another picture cuz it wasn’t correct. Make sure to show ur ears and not wear any type of piercings, including earrings when u take the picture.
Right after they allow people in, u go through a metal detector and your personal items are x-rayed. Then head up to the 2nd floor. Once everyone is in, the lady starts to explain some basic instructions and provide a paper that tells how to organize your documents in the right order. She will check your documents and later you will go through a room for another person to check the same documents again. Then you go back to your seat and wait your turn until the interview.
After long while waiting patiently, it was my turn. The interviewer was nice, as well as the other consulate people. It starts by scanning your fingerprints and you are sworn to tell the truth. He looks through the papers during most of the interview and constantly type on his computer.
The questions were: 1) When did u go to USA and how long did u stayed there? 2) How did you meet your fiancé? 3) What are you going to do when u arrive in USA?
Then he said OK you are approved, please go downstairs to pay the fee to mail your visa back to your house, it will take around 2 weeks.
That is all. Thank God I remained very calm and patient the whole time. Some people were very nervous and sick, but I tell you that being like that won’t solve the problem. Just relax. Make sure you have everything they ask you to bring and you will be approved for sure, I bet
