Review Topic: K1 Visa

My girls and I had our medical on June 22. We arrived early and we were one of the first people there. The lady came and opened the door but didn't mention to take a number in the order we arrived. When we got off the elevator a few of the people who arrived after us rushed to get a number, plus there were at least 15 people already there. The gate was open when we arrived so we waited by the glass doors at the side. I am assuming the other people who were already there were waiting out front and were let in another way.

We had to fill out and sign some papers. By the time we were finished handing back the papers we got right in for our blood work. The lady my daughter got was really nice. The one I got I am not sure if she was having a bad day or she is always so serious. She asked my Last name so I told her then she said first and last name so I told her. She asked me to verify my name and then took my blood. I smiled and said hi and said thank you and good bye and she never cracked a smile or bothered to acknowledge I said anything. We then went right in for our X-ray. My daughter and I were put in one of the empty X-ray rooms to change and my younger daughter was able to come in there with us. Then we waited for our turn to see the doctor. The staff was really nice. They put my younger daughter and me in an exam room they had her see the doctor first. She had to strip down to her panties and was not at all happy about it. It was a good thing we had a female doctor. She was really nice and asked Paige questions about school and made her feel comfortable. I was told by the nurse that my older daughter was in the other exam room and when Paige was done I could send her out and they would check her eyes and weigh and measure her. By then my older daughter would be done and she could go sit with her. While I was waiting in the room I could hear the staff talking to my daughter Paige and making her feel comfortable and keeping her entertained until my older daughter was done. The exam was pretty basic the doctor asked about prior surgeries and medication, then she checked my ears, throat, checked my neck arms, legs and abdomen and told me touch my toes to check my back and told me walk to the corner of the room. She also gave me a breast exam. (Younger girls like my daughter who is 17 yrs old can leave their bra on.)

I was extremely nervous the whole time but there really isn't anything to be nervous about. We were done by 10:30. We came back at 1:25 and they had our results ready. There was another VJ there but I didn't know at the time.

Now for the Interview

Our interview was scheduled to 10am we arrived just after 9am so we went to starbucks on the corner and got something to drink. We headed over to get in line around 9:30 there were people in the 10am line. A lady came up to us and asked us for the paper and when I handed her our interview conformation she was a little confused and asked if I had one with a bar code and my picture on it. I mentioned it was for a K1 visa and she then said oh ok and checked our names on her list. She then told us to put our medical results in with our passports and go stand in the other line. It wasn't long till we were going through security. They had us empty our pockets and put our stuff in a brown box. I don't even think they bothered to look through the accordion folder I brought with all my stuff in it. I had a car key with electronic entry and when we got to the second security check I asked if I was allowed to have it and he said I was done with security check. We were told to go to window B. We waited there for a couple of minutes and a man came to the window and smiled and asked how I was then he asked for the forms, I handed them to him and he was happy that I had everything in order and asked if I had hired a lawyer. I told him I did it myself and he commented again how organized I was. He asked me why I was refused entry into the US and I explained that I was in the process of moving and had all my personal belongings in my car and I was going to go visit my boyfriend and then go to where I was moving to. I said I wasn't even thinking at the time that it wasn't a smart thing to do and he just laughed. He asked if that was the reason I was now applying for a fiance visa? I laughed and said no that was when I first tried to go visit him, we have been going back and forth for 5 yrs now. He finished making sure he had everything and then he said to take a seat. It would be a 2hr wait and explained if we needed to go to the bathroom it was on the second floor as well as a fountain if we needed a drink. It was 12:30 and the girls needed to go to the bathroom so I told them to go. Of course while they were gone I was called to the window. I told him my children had to leave to go to the bathroom and he said that was fine we could start without them. He started with my fingerprints and by the time he was done with them my children had returned. He took my older daughters finger prints. Then he said my fiance's name and asked if he was my fiance. Then he asked if we had a wedding date set? What he did for a living? What I did for a living? Then he asked me if I was willing to swear and to raise my right had and he asked if the information I provided them was true and if I intend to marry my fiance within 90days of my arrival into the US. He asked about why I was refused entry into the US and I explained again why and he said it happens. Then he said congratulations you are approved. He didn’t ask to see any of my proof of engagement or relationship. He said he would send everything back to window B and they would tell me how to pick up my visa. I went back to window B and the same man I had earlier explained because of the American holiday and the weekend my visa may take a little longer but hopes it will be done by Thursday but it may not be done till Tuesday and then shipped to the DHL office I chose. He asked if I had any questions and I asked if I would still be able to visit my fiance before I actually move to get married. He said it shouldn't be a problem as long as you let them know that you intend to come back into Canada. I asked it if would be a good thing to have a letter from my employer saying they expect me back at work and he said it wouldn’t hurt to have it but he didn't think that would matter because I have already been approved for the visa so they won't be worried about me staying illegally. He apologized for it taking so long because there are usually 4 people to do the K visas but they only had two people today. Everyone was really nice and made my whole experience a good one. I had a long wait but it doesn't seem so bad when you are dealing with nice people. I was done by 1pm which I was expecting anyway so I didn’t even realize I was waiting longer than usual.
