Our journey is finally over. Our interview was scheduled for 7:45 AM at New Delhi consulate. My husband and I reached the consulate at 7:15 and waited outside the gates along with 50 or 60 people. We were let in at 7:30, after showing the interview letter and passport. They have a desk outside the gates where you can deposit cell phones if you happen to carry them with you. Be sure to turn off the cellphone before giving it to them for safekeeping.
Once inside the building, they looked at the interview again, and assigned a number; we were the 2nd in line. Inside the building, we were asked to go towards the far end of the building and wait to be called. They opened the windows at 7:55. It took a long time for them to process the family ahead of us. We were called to the window at 8:15. The Indian interviewer asked my husband for medical report (which he had submitted to VFS), passport, and interview letter. He went and got our VFS package. We had submitted all our originals to NVC, so there was nothing required at the consulate. While the guy was doing something on his computer screen, and also looking at our documents, he started asking questions:
Who is the petitioner?
When did you get married?
Where did you get married?
Have you stayed in any country for more than an year?
Have you ever been to the US before?
He was very polite and had a smile on his face all through the process, which lasted for about 10 minutes. He returned some of the original documents like birth certificate, medical report, and tax returns. He then sent us to get finger priting done at a different window, and asked us to come back to his window after fingerprinting. The fingerprinting windows had long lines. But we had to stand in line there for about 5 minutes. There, we had to show the interview letter again and they took fingerprint of both hands. We went back to the first window, and the guy asked us to wait to be called for the conuslar interview. Within 2 or 3 minutes, our number came up again for consular interview. This time it was an American, who was very stern and did not smile, though he spoke a few words in Hindi to confirm that we understood English. When my husband said 'yes', he started in English. First thing he did was take the oath and signature on DS-230 Part II. Here are the questions, in the sequence it was asked:
Why did you get divorced?
How did your wife immigrate to the US?
Did your parents meet your wife before marriage?
Did her parents attend the wedding? (at this time, he offered to show the wedding photos, be he said that was not necessary)
There is an unusual age difference, was it not a problem?
Have you visited US before? How long were you there? Which cities did you visit? (business0
Why did you go to UK? (business)
Where does first wife live?
He then said your visa is approved, and will be couriered to you. We asked about the other original documents, he said it will be sent via the courier. That was end of it. Though I was there with my husband, I was never asked any questions. All questions were directed to my husband. We were inside the consulate for 1 hour and 15 minutes, and were out by 8:45 AM. Overall it was a really fast and smooth experience.
