Review Topic: K1 Visa

My fiancee and I applied for the K1 visa on 20 August 2010. On 25 April 2011, she held the visa in her hand.

I am not going to write a dissertation of our experience. However, this forum helped us so I want to pay it forward. The process to get to the Juarez appointment is fairly the same and predictable. But once you get to the Juarez appointment stage...it is not stable nor predictable. Here are some key points:

The area around the consulate is safe. We stayed at the Holiday Inn and could walk to the medical center, consulate and restaurants without danger. We did not however venture out at night and it may be different after sundown.

On your way to the consulate area, there will be people who will approach you under the guise of helping. Do not accept it. These people are called coyotes for a reason.

The consulate website states that for a K-1 visa no appointment letter is necessary. That information has not been shared with the two medical centers. You must have an appointment letter. You can go to the information booth at the consulate compound and they will print it out but you will spend ~ 1 hour in line. If you have an child seeking a K-2 visa, their name(s) must be on the appointment letter before the medical centers will accept it.

Do not wait on the website (www.mexico.usvisa-info.com) to give you the DHL waybill information. My fiancee held the visa on 25 April (it arrived the prvious week). Today is 29 April and the website reads..."there is no information on the DHL waybill number at this time". If you contact the call center, they simply pass along the info that is on the website. The best approach is to wait 2 weeks after the interview and start going by the local DHL office every afternoon. By the way, the website states that you must have the waybill number to collect the package....you don't. All you need is your identification (i.e. voter card).

I hope you find this information helpful and I wish you much success...
