Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

My husband and I had a great experience with the local Sacramento USCIS office in adjusting his status. We were 15 minutes early but there was a large crowd in the lobby - I don't think being early made any difference, though, because we were still called in at around 1:30.

We were very nervous because we heard so many stories about how they were going to grill us for minute details (color of husband's underwear, asking husband where wife keeps the towels, etc) so we were expecting some intense questions.

A white man in his 40s called our name and we entered his office. He quickly made us take the oath of truth and we sat down. While he pulled out our file, my husband cracked a couple jokes to ease the tension. I think it worked really well

He reviewed my husband's AOS application to ensure that there were no changes. We made a change - added his SSN, which he got after we submitted the AOS application. Sign and date at the bottom of the application and that was squared away.

The USCIS officer's first question was directed to me - he asked how we knew each other and when we met. I told him our story in less than 90 seconds - met online in 2004 through mutual friends, met in person in Dec 2005, been best friends ever since, began sharing feelings after I left Egypt in 2009, proposal in December 2009 and engaged immediately afterwards. I made a joke that all our friends thought we would end up getting together and we always refuted it because we weren't each others' types - but sometimes God works in mysterious ways

His next question was also to me - he asked if I was still working and requested my last pay stub. I showed him and he then asked if I had any other documents to show him. I pulled out all the documents we had:

- Insurance Benefits - Husband's name listed as "spouse"
- Bank statement + Letter - Husband's name on joint account
- Phone bill - Husband's phone line on joint account
- Gym membership - Husband's name listed as "spouse"
- Pictures - Civil marriage ceremony (only my parents were there!) + reception afterwards + events in/around Sacramento

He said we were very well prepared (I'll take credit for that :D) and that the case was easy to approve! We were elated, of course - however, he said he was going to do a quick background check later that afternoon and if it were clear, he'd send it off for card production. Lo and behold, later that afternoon I got an update on my USCIS web account showing that they'd ordered card production for my husband's green card

All in all, a very easy process at the Sacramento office. We were very pleased and don't think people should be too worried, knock on wood!
