Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

I had mixed feelings when rating this Embassy. There were very positive things and big frustrations as well. The positive was that the interviewer was kind, respectful, and clear in instruction. Another positive was that when I finally was able to use a bathroom at the Embassy, when I blacked out a medic was called and I was given appropriate care.

I believe what happened negatively at our interview will help other couples who will prepare to interview there.

1st. Check to be sure NVC has all original documents and sent them to the embassy. We were told my husbands original birth certificate was never sent, however it was given back to us at the interview. We chose to get another original birth certificate just in case.

2nd. We submitted an I-864 along with taxes and all required financial documents but they did not have it at our first interview in Lagos so they said they could not process our visa at the first interview. BUT we had a COPY, of everything sent to NVC. They did not accept that copy that day.

3rd. They wanted a new medical exam and police certificate, stating they were expired. That wasn't true, ours were not expired but - we chose to get new ones anyway because they needed them. The cost involved did not make us happy but we tried to assume that there was some reason for it. So if they give you an instruction, there is a reason for it. We brought all the documents they required to the second interview after receiving the 221(g) document.

Our interview was for an IR-1, we had an original K3 non-immigrant interview that was denied and it took 2 years to reapprove. So because we were reapproved I am not sure the questions they asked us are the same as an IR-1 who was coming newly to their first interview. The questions they asked were rom the DS-230 form, where do you live, etc. The Senator's office was very helpful, American Citizen Rep. at Lagos Embassy was helpful. Make copies of everything you are bringing to an interview. Be certain there are no significant errors in your paperwork - make copies of all the papers you send USCIS, NVC, and the consulate/embassy. Be sure there are no typos too.
