Adjusting from F-1 student visa to Legal Permanent Resident via marriage to a U.S. Citizen: (I-485, I-130, I-765)
We arrived for our appointment about 30 minutes early. I wanted to make sure we had time to find the place in case we were lost (I expected it to be near the USCIS support center further West, but it was actually much closer to I-15 and 5300 S.)
We were called in 5 minutes after our appointment time. We followed Office Quarrel (I think was his name?) to his office.
He swore us both in and simply asked how we met. He was very personable, and continued to read over our paperwork with us, checking ID numbers we listed against the paperwork we brought with us (SSN, A#, etc).
At one point, he opened my wife's passport and started to mark out her student visa with a black marker. I thought to myself, "Nooooo" but then he smiled at us and said, "You can't have a non-immigrant visa if you're approved as an immigrant!" *phew*
He referred to our supporting evidence such as bank statements, utility bills, retirement accounts, etc. as the "meat and potatoes" and to our photo album as "dessert". We finished the interview by going through our pictures and showing him all of the little road trips we've taken together.
The entire interview took about 20 minutes, although he informed us we were approved after about 5 minutes. The final 15 minutes was just finishing reviewing paperwork and going through pictures.
Office Quarrel was really friendly. I wanted to give the guy a hug when we were done. Instead, we just thanked him, shook his hand, and then walked out quietly so we could celebrate loudly in our car.
Great experience all around!
