Rating: | Review Topic: K1 Visa
We (my fiance was here for the interview) arrived at the embassy at 9am to submit documents. There were a lot of people waiting and only one counter was serving immigrant visas. (Technically, the K1 is a non-immigrant visa but the embassy places them in the same category as immigrant ones just for speedier processing and to ease the burden of officers servicing non-immigrant visas). The officer who attended to us was friendly and helpful. He was surprised that we knew to show up at 9am because when he looked at our appointment letter, he realized that that part was missing. We explained that through corresponding with the embassy staff, we were notified of this. He was very apologetic and thanked us for being understanding. The document submission was quick because we had our stuff organized. We got to the counter at 9:20am (paid then too, before the actual interview) and was done by 9:30am. We were told to come back at 1:30pm for our interview.
We got back to the embassy by 1:15pm, and there were 3 cases before us. It took a long time to get to us, we were called to the counter at 2:45. There, another officer told us that she only wanted to speak to me, and told my fiance to take a seat. She swore me in (tell the truth etc) and had me sign my forms in front of her. She then asked me 2 questions: how did we meet and how did our relationship became serious. After that, she told us that our visa was approved and to pick it up at Wisma MCA the next day. The whole interview lasted all of 5 minutes. It was quick, easy and we were very pleasantly surprised.
That said, a caveat: My fiance was there with me so this might have affected our interview. As we were sitting in the embassy for quite some time, the officer had a lot of time and opportunity to observe us. This may or may not have affected her questions or decision. However, the US embassy in Malaysia does not really have a reputation for being difficult.
All in all, a 5 for our embassy experience.
