I went with my Fiance to the consulate for the interview. Everything went smoothly. We lined up outside the building in the early morning about an hour before our interview time. There were about 200 other people and I noticed 2 other Americans. Eventually a couple embassy employees came out and had everyone line up according to interview time. (I'm not actually sure what they were saying) We were one of the first to head up the escalator and I was allowed to pass until we got the 3rd or 4th floor where I had to wait. This floor has a very expensive cafe and several travel agencies. I waited for about 2 hours and chatted with another American who was on his second try. His wife and her daughter came out first with their approval and gave me the good news about my fiancee. About 10 minutes later my fiancee came out with her pink slip. The interview with the consular officer was very brief. The lady looked through our pictures and asked some questions about them and then asked some basic questions about me and my family that anybodies fiance should be able to answer. She asked some in Chinese and some in English but my fiance answered in English. There was another applicant there who was questioned for 15 or 20 minutes by the same officer but was denied. I later saw the other American guy who I didn't talk to at the consulate at the airport and found out they were approved. We picked up my fiancee's passport at the post office on Saturday and then went to spend some time with her family. I have no real complaints about the embassy experience itself. One thing that probably could be done better was my Fiance got her approval letter less than 2 weeks before the interview and it was only by chance that I had sent an email to the consulate asking about packet 3 that they informed me of the interview date a few days before we got packet 4, otherwise I wouldn't have had enough notice to be out there for the interview. I don't see any reason why they can't just send me an email as soon as they know the interview date. The federal government isn't exactly customer service oriented but still it's pretty lame that they can't do something simple like that.
