Houssain was the last one they interviewed this morning. He said the guy that interviewed him was not really friendly, but that the guy was “ok” and cordial and respectful. There were only a couple of minor questions that Houssain could not satisfactorily answer (the exact year I graduated high school and what year I married my ex-husband). Houssain said the interview was about 10-15 minutes, and they covered most of the usual stuff (birthdates of me and my kids, my career, my family’s information). He was asked about why I got divorced. He answered “her ex husband started to take drugs and was not responsible. He did not take care of the kids like a father should.” The interviewer asked “it is strange that you would you give up a good job and everything you have. you have a good life here in Morocco.” Houssain answered “it is not about materials and job. I love her. She has a good heart.” The interviewer asked “why would you want to marry a woman who already has three kids?” Houssain answered “because I love her. Even if she was older than me and had more kids, I would still want to be with her because I love her.”
The interviewer asked "why doesn't she come here?” Houssain explained "because she would not be coming here alone. She would bring three kids. So that would be a big life change for 4 people. Where if I go there, it is a big life change for just one person. Also, her son alex, is in school and has lived in America for 8 years. It would be hard for him to adjust and go to school here in morocco right now.” The interviewer asked about my living situation and why I live with my mom. Houssain told him "she does have her own home, but she prefers to live with her mom. she is old and jennifer takes care of her." The interviewer asked about my religion. I was learning about Islam before I met Houssain, and I announced my shahada about a month after meeting Houssain. The interviewer asked “was she muslim when you met?” Houssain said “no, but she was learning about islam and we talked about it a lot when we first met online”. The interviewer asked “did she know any muslims before you?” Houssain said “I’m not sure but I think so. She was learning and talking about wanting to meet some muslims. She does have muslim friends now.” The interviewer asked what religion I was before reverting. Houssain answered “Christian.” He asked “what kind of Christian?” Houssain said “I don’t really know, she said her family was just Christian.”
In the end, the man gave Houssain the “we regret to inform you” letter, the “other” box was checked and the reason provided was “Further review of your case.” The guy told Houssain that they would call him “in a week”.
I called the consulate this morning (immigration visa phone #212661998364), asking why the additional review is needed. The woman would only say “the reviewer must look over the information El Houssain gave him, and we will call El Houssain when his case is ready.” I asked her if it would be within a week, like the interviewer told him, and she said “we cannot tell you it will be one week. it may be more”.
Houssain and I are going to be patient, and wait the week. And if he has not heard anything by next Wednesday, then I will be calling Casablanca again, to find out what’s going on.
