All in all, I have to say the process was pretty easy. I arrived in Denmark the end of Oct 2008 and filed for my residency in December. In late January, we decided we wanted to live in the US, so I contacted the embassy about applying DCF and explaining that although I had applied for my residency permit, it could take upward of 18 months to receive. They told me to submit what I had to show I was residing legally in Denmark and had not left. I sent the following items:
Lease Agreement
Utility Bills
Children's School Records
Copy of shipping agreement where we shipped my household from the US
Receipt from the Danish Immigration showing I had applied for Residency
Copy of passport to show when I entered Denmark, and that I had not left.
Copy of airline ticket flying into Denmark with cancellation of return flight.
They accepted this evidence and gave us a May 1, 2009 appointment to file the I-130 as this would mark the 6 month period. We arrived for the appointment very prepared. Apparently there was some confusion over my "eligibility", but I was a bit dismayed at this as they had already reviewed my case ahead of time and gave us the go ahead. After waiting a couple hours, they agreed to accept my I-130.
They were VERY thorough in checking my paperwork not once, not twice, but three times to be sure there were no errors. There weren't  They then reviewed my I-864 to be sure it would meet the requirements at the time of interview. All was well there also Then the vice consulate came out and spoke to me and my husband, I guess you could really consider this the "interview", although it technically wasn't since they hadn't even approved my I-130 yet. He asked the standards:
How did you meet
How long did you date before marrying
How many kids does she have (directed at the immigrant)
That was it! No more questions and we left.
All in all, the entire process went very smoothly and very fast! Took exactly two months from the filing of the I-130 to when he got his visa.
When he showed up for his interview on July 1st, they didn't ask him any questions. The vice consulate said he remembered us and had already talked to us, so he had no questions. One glitch, however, when they set the interview, they told my husband if all went well at the interview he could pick up his visa the following day. Based on that, we booked his travel for July 3rd. Well, surprise! After the interview they told him he could pick it up the following Tuesday. He was shocked and tried to tell the lady what they had told him about the next day, she wouldn't listen, so he left.
He got back to the apartment and sent them an urgent email. They called him and explained that the only day the embassy is open to the public for walkins is on Tuesday and Friday, but the coming Friday was a US holiday so he would have to come the next Tuesday. After some discussion, the lady actually agreed to let him come the next day, but would not let him inside the embassy. She told him she would meet him outside the embassy at exactly 3 pm with his papers and visa. True to form, she was there, so in the end it all worked out.
So, those of you getting your visa through Denmark. Note the following days:
Friday is the day they set appointments for filing the petition
Wednesday is the day they conduct interviews.
Tuesdays and Fridays are "walk in" days, so if you are picking up your visa in person it would be on one of these two days.
