My experience with the consulate was both good and bad. When I recieved my letter in the mail it said my appointment date was November 13, 10am 2006. I was shocked because by then all my stuff on my check list would be expired which was pointless. I sent an email back asking what the problem was and they informed me they had made a mistake and it was supposed to be FEB 13 10am 2006. I was so relieved I got a new letter a couple days later. Anyway though my point out of this don't be afraid to question them, they make mistakes too.
My interview started off getting there by bus it was actually pretty easy and the bus goes within 2 blocks of where you have to be. When I got there, I found the place on the SIDE of the building where you stand out till it's your time, the line is kind of confusing but just go tell the officer your there and ask him what to do. He told me to come back in 30 mintues cause I had got there early. Lots of places to eat around there to kill time or even go see the ocean. I came back and I was put through a couple screens of security without any hassle really. The guards seemed kinda out of it and mean at times, (while waiting for my appt they would mumble things out under their breathe) You sit in a seperate room, where you can see the other room of people coming for work and education visas. Lots of them. Finally at 11:15 am or so (my appt was at 10am) I got called up to a glass window type thing where a very nice man from the consulate asked me for all my stuff on my check list and we very nicely talked about just stuff. haha. He also kindly offered to photocopy some stuff for me so I could keep originals. After that he sent me to the other side of the office where I paid my $100 to a cashier and obtained a receipt. After that I went back and waited again where he told me to come back at about 2pm to get my Visa.
I came back at 2 pm with a little expecting my interview to be like a job interview and the same man came to the window along with what seemed his supervisor and he asked me like maybe 3 questions? When was the last time you saw your wife? How long you plan on living there? That was about it. I was surprised he then looked over my stuff signed it. Gave me an envelope to give to the people at my point of entry and my passport with my Visa! In all if your organized you should have not trouble at all. Also expect to kill a whole day doing this.
