We applied for a CR1 visa. I am Italian and she is American. We got married last september in Miami and then moved to Italy.
We started the process as per our timeline.
Where to sleep:
I went to areamare.org. It's a bed and breakfast very close to the consulate. Not more than 5 min walking. It's in a bulding on the 3rd floor. The room are big but kind of old. There is a big restroom with shower, sink, bide and a window in the bathroom.
The place was overall comfortable and neat. DO NOT EXPECT a 5stars hotel.
I paid 55euros per night.
To get there form the airport i took a 3euro ticket for the alibus to piazza Garibaldi then the metroplitana till Mergellina (4 stops). The B&B is 10 min walk from Mergellina station.
Medical examination:
I had the appointment at the Istituto Varelli at 8:45am. I was there at 7:30am using a cab from areamare. Taxi ride was 10 euros. Get there earlier does not give you any advantage.
The people there are nice and pretty efficient.
At the entrance give your passport at the receptionist then they call you for the blood tests. They check for STD and HIV.
Next is registation for vaccination and you pay the medical 180 euro. You can ask you comune the vaccination form and complete the missing vaccination c/o the local ASL. It is cheaper than to the istituto Varelli.
Next they X ray your chest and you have the visit with the doc. The doctor weighs you, checks your blood pressure and your heart.
Before finish they will tell you'll find all the medical result at the consulate the next day. In the yellow envolpe you'll find X-rays, vaccination and the invoice. If something is wrong with you medical they Istituto Varelli calls you around 1/1:30PM. No call means everything's ok
Total time 2/3 hours.
Consulate:
I had an appointment at 8:00am. I arrived at 7:35am and i was #11. There is not a real need to be there early because you have to wait anyway and they give back the passport at 5pm.
When you arrive you wait in line for security check before going in the consulate. Mobile phone will be kept at the security gate.
- First step. One nice woman will go through the documentation you brought with you to try to sort it out. I only had a wedding licence because i called 10days before the consulate and they had all my documentation that we sent to NVC so i did not bring any other copy.
- Second step. Wait till they call you. You go to the counter and they check all the documentation you sent to USCIS and NVC. They also request to scan your fingerprints. If you have all the documantation ok they tell you to wait for the interview.
- Third step. I was called by the vice consul. She asked me my date of birth and went very fast trough my papers. No special questions. Very fast and smooth. She gave me a map and told me to go to mail box etc shown in the map at 5:00PM to get back my passport and the envelope to give at the point of entry. Mail box etc requires a fee of 6 euros and it's 5 min walking distance from the consulate.
Overall was very easy but time consuming. Lots of waiting.
