submitted the I-130 for my wife on 04/30/09 at the Consulate in São Paulo and it was a pretty painless experience. Our appointment was scheduled for 8:30.
We came prepared with more documentation than we actually needed. I had my b-certificate, proof about our relationship (emails, letters), etc and none of that was needed. The woman only wanted:
1. The completed I-130
2. Copy of the biographical page of my passport
3. My RNE's for the last two years (to prove residency)
4. G-325A's for my wife and me
5. Original and copy of my wife's b-certificate
6. Original and copy of our marriage certificate
7. 1 5 x 7 cm photo of my wife and me
After we gave all of these documents to her she gave us a slip to pay the $355 filing fee. I paid with a credit card from the US.
When we get back to the ACS room we wait about 10 minutes before the guy that I think is the consul or vice consul calls us to the window. The questions he asks are:
1. How did we meet?
2. Is my wife pregnant?
3. How long have we been living together?
4. What was my profession in the States before I came to Brazil?
5. What do I do in Brazil?
There might have been a few other simple questions that I can't remember. He then explained that the petition would be sent to the Consulate in Rio and that we would get further instructions from them. We had some questions about the processing times and he really wasn't able to answer because the SP consulate doesn't do any of the work. They just verify the initial documentation and let Rio handle the rest.
All in all it was quick and easy and we're hoping that the rest of the process goes just as smooth.
