It was a reasonably stressful day as I was nervous, but the process was extremely easy. The consulate was fairly busy on the day, but immigrant visas get priority over tourist visas (which I assume most of the people were there for) so I was processed rather quickly after taking a number from the ticket machine.
They call you up and send you back to sit in the waiting area quite a few times, and then they finally call you up to a window where you have a brief chat with a consular officer who asks a couple of questions and then congratulates you on having your visa approved.
The only thing I was not expecting is that the consulate held my passport and posted it back to me (because they have to insert the visa in to the passport). I wasn't expecting that and was a bit concerned about it as I had to fly back home to the other side of the country, but I was able to use my driver's license at the airport so the passport was not needed. It would have been nice for the Consulate to warn me of that before going there.
Overall though I was not there for very long before my visa was approved, and it was a pretty painless process.
