Review Topic: K1 Visa

My K1 visa interview was scheduled at 9am today, 30-Jan-2009. Although the first lady (an Asian with American accent) was not that friendly, the whole process went well. More importantly, I have been approved! Yay!!!javascript:emoticon('')

I arrived at 8:25am, waiting at the tent outside of the Embassy until the guard called us, those have appointment at 8:45am and 9:00am to get in line. It was about 10 minutes to 9:00am. After the security check and all, I went straight to the room for non-immigrant and immigrant visas. It is on the left after the heavy glass doors. There were not many visa applicants today, about 50 of them I supposed. It was more when I was here for the tourist visa application before. Anyway, I pressed the first button on the queuing machine that shows Immigrant Visa and waited for my number to be called. Mine was 002. After waiting for few minutes, window 7, labeled for Immigrant Visa was opened. 001 was called but no one answered, I indeed saw it was left at the queuing machine after I pressed mine, it could be someone pressed wrongly beforehand. Subsequently, my number was called and I went to said window. The first lady whom I mentioned above asked some questions when she collected the required documents (duplicate copies of DS-156 and DS-156K, original and translated and certified copy birth certificates, Affidavit of Support along with employment letter, bank statement and 3 recent months pay stubs, both police reports from Malaysia and Singapore, cashier order - S$183.40 and 2 US passport-sized photos) from me.

When I was asked for more evidence of our relationship, I took everything out of my “suitcase” - the latest Paris trip’s original boarding passes, buying stuff and hotel receipts, photos, chat/call histories (Yahoo and Skype), Vonage call summary (VIOP), emails, both our cellphones’ call summary and statement, letter of intent (aware of my pregnancy) and testimonials from my fiancé’s long-time friends/colleagues. I tried to submit all I have, but she just wanted the Paris trip’s original boarding passes and hotel receipts, Skype chat/call history, and some photos of us taken in Paris. After that, she asked me to take a seat and wait for my name to be called.

The first lady asked the following questions,
1.) Are you married?
2.) Have you been to the US?
3.) Did you apply any US visa before?
4.) How and when did you meet your fiancé? Which website?
5.) How many times have you met him in person? When were they?
6.) Was he married before?
7.) What is he doing for living?
8.) Do you have any other proof of your relationship with your fiancé?

After about 45 minutes of waiting, my name was called by an American lady at window 5. I am not sure if it’s the same window for everyone when they have the second interview. I have to admit that unlike the first lady, this American lady was very friendly and nice. She first greeted me and returned all my submitted original documents along with a piece of rather small-sized cashier order receipt (actually I didn’t know it does serve the purpose of collecting my passport back in a week until she told me so after the congratulation). She then asked me to raise my right hand and swear that what I had provided were correct and accurate. I said YES and she smiled. Well, she smiled a lot during the interview process.

The second lady asked the following questions,

1.) How and when did we meet? Which website?
2.) Did you meet other men besides him on that said website?
3.) How many times have you both met in person?
4.) Was he married before? Does he have any children with his late wife?
5.) Is he aware that you are pregnant?
6.) Who does he live with now?
7.) When is your due date?

She even commented that I should fly sooner since I am due in May. Last of all, she said everything looked good here, congratulated and asked me to come back in a week for my passport/visa collection by providing that “tiny” cashier order receipt at window 7. javascript:emoticon('')
